Can MN settle this boring toilet cleaning debate at work please

Very boring topic but can MN please settle this tedious toilet cleaning debate at work please.

I work in a salon. We all help clean up at the end of the day and we take turns to clean the salon toilet at the end of the day.

One of the girls I work with insists on leaving the bleach down overnight. Me and the other girl just tend to pop the bleach down and get stuck in straight away scrubbing with the loo brush (sorry anti loo brush people) and flushing. It's what I do at home aswell.

Mine and my other friend's argument is it stinks the toilet room out her way and she is not even giving it a scrub. Her argument is we are not actually giving it time to kill the germs our way and customers like to smell that it's been cleaned anyway.

It's only a light hearted argument between us. We are not coming to blows or work tribunal over it but the toilet room is stinking of bleach this morning. Who's in the right?

Bleach needs a contact time of 10 minutes to kill germs. I put bleach in leave it while I do rest of bathroom and then toilet last so it has time to work

ThisOneLife · 06/05/2026 08:30
  1. Clean the toilet with cleaner & brush
  2. Use long flush to flush away dirty water and rinse the brush
  3. 3 Put some bleach in the toilet paying attention to under the rim and leave with brush in the water so it gets bleached as well. Ideally leave for at least 15 mind while you do something else.

Hotel chambermaid training!

Nothingrhymes · 06/05/2026 08:33

The cleaning firm i worked for didn't allow us to use bleach because it was a safety issue.

I certainly wouldn't want bleach to be left over night incase any one used the toilet not realising it was there. There has been at least one publicised case of a woman sustaining nasty burns because she used a pub toilet which the cleaner had left bleach in.

Owly11 · 06/05/2026 08:34

No way should the bleach be left overnight. She sounds like a cf trying to get out of actually cleaning the toilet. If she wants to leave bleach a while she needs to wait with it and scrub it and flush before leaving the premises. It's also a little risky leaving bleach in a toilet that someone else may come in and use without realising as they may get splashed with bleach. Tell the cf to do her job and stop side tracking with stupid arguments about the best way to clean the toilet.

Someonesawu · 06/05/2026 08:35

Who’s the manager of the 3?

MayRibbons · 06/05/2026 08:38

Non bleach toilet cleaner. We use Delphis, but other options are available. They don't smell like bleach and obvs are kinder to the environment.

Then @ThisOneLife describes: clean toilet with brush and cleaner; flush and use water to clean brush; put cleaner in toilet (especially under rim) and leave as long as you can.

(Only just heard about leaving the toilet brush in the clean bowl with the cleaner -- genius; will adopt! Thank you)

Bleach won't dissolve limescale.

What I do is push as much water round the bend as possible and then use proper descaler. Give it half an hour and scrub, then flush.

Alternatively, drop a couple of denture cleaner tablets in, leave overnight then scrub and flush next morning.

If she puts bleach down the toilet then leaves it, is she cleaning the rest of the toilet eg seat? Or just the bleach and run, if so what happens the next morning?

How many times does it get used per day? Does it actually need cleaning daily?

As she’s the manager you might have to just do it her way.

babasaclover · 06/05/2026 10:21

Absolutely love the smell of bleach it shows that it’s Clean

Belladog1 · 06/05/2026 10:26

I leave bleach overnight. On a weekend I generally put the bleach down and leave it as long as possible. I have 3 toilets in my house and live alone, so one might get left an hour and the others overnight.

Bitzee · 06/05/2026 10:34

If you really want to get in to it you’re all wrong. Bleach should ideally be left for about 10-15 mins to kill germs. But really it doesn’t matter too much so long as the loo is clean for opening the next morning and the bleach has been flushed before anyone uses it.

Yeah we use a Dettol type disinfectant for the seat etc.

That toilet does get used a fair bit between us and clients in the salon during the day.

And yeah I know. She is my boss but I'm a rebel and just do it my own way anyway. Same as my colleague. As long as it gets done she's happy although I do think the toilet room stinks of bleach the next morning her way.

Toilet brushes ugh (shudder). Bleach left overnight for me. I’m with your colleague.

Pepperedpickles · 06/05/2026 13:38

I actually do a combination of the two (!) I put the bleach down, scrub it with the toilet brush and then leave it overnight.

pizzaHeart · 06/05/2026 13:38

I agree with @Bitzee .
but as she is an owner…

I know I know. It's like a gas chamber when you open the door to the toilet room in the morning though.

Ha yeah sorry. I can vouch the brush is changed fairly regularly though.

Bleach down and leave overnight here. Putting it down and scrubbing it off right away is pointless.

Fair enough. Seems to be the most popular response on here that I have been doing it wrong and she is right. I'll have to amend my ways to follow suit I suppose and leave the bleach down.
