Slept so well on holiday...now back to horrible sleep

Had 2 weeks in Costa Rica..so it was warm and humid, some places had air con, one didn't. But, I slept so well and woke up feeling refreshed..even if had had a cocktail/meal out. We often got up at 5am and felt great.

Back home (UK) and I'm waking up during the night and just feel awful in the mornings: heavy headed, dry eyes, dry nose, achy...like I did before the holiday.

Do I suit humidity or something??
It can't be that different can it?

We did have super big beds...maybe I need to size up?

Maybe you're allergic to something in your environment? Do you always sleep better when it's hot? What about summers here?

I sleep much better on holiday. I think its because at home if l cant sleep l get up and read my book/ have a drink...whatever.
On holiday there is no where for me to go other than the bedroom so l stay in bed and then fall asleep again.
We do have a king-size bed at home but holiday beds seem so much more luxurious somehow, so maybe its that also..

Less stress on holiday compared to everyday life?

Allergies?

How old is your mattress?

Noise issues?

Beebopwasthebest · 05/05/2026 00:07

I don't think I have allergies...but I am thinking maybe the luxurious beds had something to do with it.

I think it was you were exercising more and on screens much less

You can buy humidifiers which be worth a try?. Our house is quite ‘dry’ and a humidifier has really helped my daughter with congestion and a cough at night
otherwise I imagine you were walking more than normal, doing new things, which can tire you out more then the usual routine

FrenchandSaunders · 05/05/2026 09:19

what job do you do? Are you more sedentary/desk based at home than on holiday? Swimming, walking etc.

WillieBanjo · 05/05/2026 09:19

Did you sleep on the same side of the bed as you do at home? I noticed this when we moved house.

Also the bed thing is worth exploring. Years ago we both noticed that we had slept better on holiday and came home and bought the same lux feather down duvet and new more expensive pillows and slept much better and would no go back. (Already has a big bed)

Thanks for the suggestions:).
I suspect it's probably a mix...I was just struck on how marked the difference was in how I felt when I woke up!

I have a pretty active job but work long days so need to work on a better evening routine I think...and have planted the seed about new quilt and next size up bed...husband is 6 foot three and likes to sleep on pillows down the centre of the bed!

I developed much less tolerance for lack.of.spacd in bed I think.

I did wonder if the room was too dry, it's a loft conversion and it can get quite warm

Less stress in the day leads to better sleep at night. Also the getting up at 5am will have been a bit of positive jet leg in that direction. I love it when you travel that way and feel perky at 5am!!

Back home the opposite is true - 7am will feel like the middle of the night and it takes a day for each hours difference to get over it.

So jet lag plus back in to a normal routine.

Super king is much bigger than a king so well worth the investment in my eyes OP.

Were you fairly active on the trip? Spending lots of time outside? That will all help with sleep.
