Has anyone here tried hypnotherapy?

I’ve just made an appointment for my teenage Gd. I don’t want to go into detail as it may be outing, but the problems are mostly behavioural due to past trauma and low self esteem. The therapist was confident that she could make significant changes starting at around week five.
I had cancer years ago and was offered free hypnotherapy from McMillan as I was suffering awful insomnia. I lay on a couch and closed my eyes. The therapist started talking and I felt myself kind of falling. I jumped up in tears because I couldn’t cope with the loss of control it made me feel. I never went back. So that’s my experience, can anyone share their success (or not) stories.

I tried it for insomnia, didn’t work for me.

A few times but it didn't work for me either. I think you have to be susceptible to being influenced for it to work.

I had it when I was 15. Didn’t work with me - probably because I didn’t buy into it and didn’t want to be there.

I had it for anxiety. It was life changing. I really hope it does similar for your DGD.

Springbuck · 05/05/2026 20:22

Thank you. This is what I’m worried about. I definitely felt myself going under and I was a complete unbeliever.
well we will try a session and see how we go from there.

Tried it for childbirth and has two babies without any pain relief.

Had it for phobia and it worked

Thinking of having it for chronic pain.

So have had it three times and each time I would say I felt totally in control.

Yes… I totally messed up a driving test due to anxiety… Did a hypnotherapy app and retook and passed. I think I’m pretty suggestible as hypnotherapy definitely took me into trance-like state - not the case for everyone.

I had it for a specific anxiety I struggled with nightly for years. It literally disappeared after one session and never came back. It was life changing

Really helped me for poor sleep.

I have been looking into it for my DS who has a needle phobia but I don’t know really how to find the right person or what process to follow. Did she find someone online or was it through her GP?

I found it online. I read all the testimonials and researched hypnotherapy in general. I hope it works as we’re at crisis point.

I've never tried it myself, but my sister went to see someone when she was trying to give up smoking. It worked for her.

I havent had a single cigarette since I was hypnotised a year ago. Bloody miracle!

For those of you with positive outcomes, do you think it might work remotely (via Zoom or similar?). And if anybody knows a good hypnotherapist in South Yorkshire, let me know!

I’ve also had it for 3 different issues and I really rate it.

You retain complete control, it’s a lot like a guided meditation, it’s like you know you could just get up and walk off at any time but you choose not to, if that makes any sense?

Most probably, if you have a peaceful place to relax and some good headphones.

A good therapist will record the sessions so you can keep practicing at home. A bit like meditation, you get better and better at it.

My granddaughter is having her first session remotely tomorrow. I was a bit sceptical but the therapist said she has clients all over the world. I will report back.

Following for my DS with awful anxiety and self-esteem issues. A bit concerned it won't work for thim though as he couldn't stop nervous laughing when we tried mindfulness.

catipuss · 06/05/2026 20:59

I learned self hypnosis which is great and you feel under control so no panic.

A good hypnotist can hypnotise almost anyone and they may hardly notice that it happened.
