…to take 12 green bags of garden waste to a tip 7 miles away?

I would have charged £50 to £60 to do this, when I did this kind of thing a couple of years ago. I am assuming large bags ("green" is not a size though, so I might be wrong,) and that the tip charges per visit as mine did.

If we leave green bags out on garden waste day the bin men take them as long as it’s all bagged - so I wouldn’t pay anything id wait for that. But guessing like a lot of things it’s a bit of a postcode lottery as to which councils offer which services.

Vans are often not allowed on council tips so it would probably end up at the side of the road somewhere.

I’m assured this guy actually does the job properly-I can only cross my fingers!

Hmm- I thought I was being undercharged at £30. I’ll give him a good tip!

That’s cheaper than our council. Hope there is nothing identifiable! Probably dumped on a farm lane. Did you check his certificates. For carrying the waste and the disposal of it?

ShakyBake · 04/05/2026 21:16

Yeah that's a real bargain, what you going to give him as a tip?

Planesmistakenforstars · 04/05/2026 21:25

If s/he's being paid to take the waste away, ask them to provide the number of their waste carrier's license. It's issued by the Environment Agency and is compulsory to take away any kind of waste as a tradeslerson. It costs to get one, and a tradesperson can't use a tip without one in their trade vehicle. If they get shirty then they don't have one.

He’s a well regarded local guy recomended by lots of people. So I can only assume he’s OK.

Yes, you need to ask to see their waste carriers license. If they don't have one they are probably illegally dumping waste. It's your responsibility to check. If your waste is found dumped you are liable for a fine, even if you didn't personally dump it.
