Has anyone ever won a dispute with a travel insurance company?! Stressing!

Has anyone ever had a travel insurance claim disputed and then won?
I’ve recently had to have a big procedure done abroad which will cost £1000’s!
The insurance company are disputing it as they said I didn’t declare a pre existing medical condition. I stupidly missed this one condition off but it doesn’t relate to the health issue I had abroad anyway.
Am I doomed?!

Not necessarily. You need to put it all in writing and send it to the insurer and say that you will send a complaint to the financial ombudsman if they do not accept your claim. See what happens then.

As an ex rep I’ve seen several holidaymakers stung with this, people either forget or more often choose not to declare what they seem as a minor condition, the insurers use it in their favour. I can’t offer above but stand your ground

WhereDoBrokenHeartsGo · 04/05/2026 15:37

Would they have covered you if you declared the pre existing condition?

My claim was initially refused due to genuinely forgetting to list a very minor non related condition. I appealed and had to go through the of udsman and got the full amount £2000 back. They said if the pre existing condition would not have made a difference to their decision to sell me a policy my appeal would be upheld. Which it was. I was told if the pre existing condition would have meant they would not sell me a policy then my appeal would have been refused. If the preexisting condition would have increased the amount charged for the policy eg 50% higher then I would get 50% of the claim. Definitely appeal. It was straightforward but did take around four or five months in total but there were delays

It depends - would they have sold you a policy had you declared the condition? Or would they have charged you extra, or put in an extra clause?

Thank you. I can only try it! 🙏🏻

Yes definitely. It’s very minor. But they might say it has a tenuous link to the claim I’m making 😭

Thank you that is so helpful and means I might get a little more sleep tonight 😭. My claim is for approx 50 times that amount though! But again what I didn’t mention doesn’t relate to it but they can try and say it does in some way. I’m wondering if my doctor can write a letter as they have asked for access to my medical records. So pleased you fought it and got your money back x

I’m very surprised the hospital went ahead with surgery without the insurance company agreeing to pay the claim. That’s very unusual. What was the surgery and which country was it in?

It was in the USA and it’s just the way they do it there. I thought the same thing 🤷🏻‍♀️
