errr haven’t we just had a 50% ruse in food prices alongside huge utility and energy/fuel hikes? I heard that and thought how much fucking higher are we going before people are unable to pay their bills?!

The UK has more going out on benefits than it has coming in in income tax for the first time, gov borrowing is charged at a higher rate of interest than any other G7 country and we have more borrowing, the trend for less dependance on home grown food and fuel means being more exposed to the impact of wars abroad - and businesses are struggling with the recent increases in nat min wage and increases in NI, the economy is not looking good right now. Even more worrying is that if KS goes after the local elections the alternative e.g Rayner or Wes Streeting could make things even worse.

WhitegreeNcandle · 03/05/2026 14:39

We have seen nothing yet when it comes to food inflation. The head of Yara spoke this week about it.

I’m a farmer and the diesel prices and fertiliser prices are through the roof. It won’t feed through for a couple of months but it’s coming big time. Add in NMW rises, electric rises and food is going to be significantly more expensive. I’ve heard 10% food inflation by December from the NFU

Billions of meals at risk due to Iran war, says fertiliser boss

A shortage of fertiliser due to the Iran conflict could reduce crop yields and push prices higher, says the boss of Yara.

Food inflation could reach 10% by the end of the year but home energy could rise over 20% by the end of the year according to Martin Lewis as we still rely heavily on imported gas. Water will also go up 5-10%, so if you can lock in a cheap energy tariff now might be a good time to do so.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 03/05/2026 15:17

What will be inflated though?

Meat, grains, veg?

I'm already spending so much on food its ridiculous, and on petrol 🥺

Nonnim · 03/05/2026 15:17

Benefits schmenefits. This is entirely caused by the stupidity of that corrupt criminal fuckwit in the White House.

Well it's not the government's fault. Blame Trump if you must blame anyone.

Everything.

Bread will go up due to fertilizer rocketing.

Fruit and veg due to electric prices increasing. Heavy users of cold stores.

Meat - cost of feed goes up due to fertilizer, sometimes high energy users. Transport is rocketing and labour increasing. Shortage of CO2 for slaughter has an effect as well.

Oh god

I'm sure that we've been in this situation since the 'credit crunch' honestly

MyJustCat · 03/05/2026 17:27

Not Trump's fault that we have worse inflation than the rest of Europe or America, if it was they'd be in exactly the same boat.

For instance France invested heavily in nuclear power so doenst have the same reliance on imported gas, better boilers and insulation would also help our energy costs. Supporting UK food producers (and I don't get the feeling farmers feel supported) and being more careful about where we import from would help with food inflation and making sure that benefits go only to those that need them - would have meant less inflation for the UK.

WaryCrow · 03/05/2026 19:15

Shame none of us can be ‘prepared’ for it following 30 years of deliberate impoverishment isn’t it?

Governments on the continent help their people in times of trouble, that’s what they exist for. In Britain they just rub their hands together and chortle in glee at how much they can rake in from us.

There are too many people here.

We will have very basic foods and be utterly skint.
People in poorer countries will face famine, starvation, disease, sickness and death.

Migration will increase as people try to stay alive.

Trump will continue to fuck around with lives to get even richer.

Exactly. Its no surprise really. The price of oil goes up so does everything else. The number of people bleating about and expecting the government to bail them out need to look back at history.

I sometimes wonder if this was a deliberate ploy to drive the share price up so that Trumps cronies could make money. While everyone else has to pick up the pieces.

You are so right. Grifter in chief Trumps mate Farage (too scared to face questions about his £5m undeclared gift).

Thank God he's not in charge hey.

If only we had our own oil reserves…

IRodeIn · 03/05/2026 19:33

He means prepare for more tax rises on people who work, to fund another generous welfare spending increase. Its just a different spin on the ‘black holes’ they ‘find’ every year.

MyJustCat · 03/05/2026 21:04

Why are Labour against taxing the super rich more, the multi-millionaires and billionaires? a carefully thought out wealth tax could help reduce inequality and raise money, it's one of the Green party's policies.

Which could be a useful temp measure as more renewables are brought online. In theory, the UK could generate nearly all its electricity domestically and reduce dependence on imported gas.

Because they will leave Britain, taking their wealth and businesses with them.

And that's the perceived worry, but when its been done in other countries only a tiny percentage left, a lot of these people's wealth is actually tied to the UK in some way. There could also be exit taxes for those that do leave - it would be useful if the treasury did some kind of study on this - or maybe they already have and decided it wasn't worth the risk. Otherwise we also risk professionals e.g doctors hitting the 100k and leaving for less tax and better working conditions elsewhere.

Interest rates and therefore mortgages will go up as that's the only tool available even though it is not the answer to inflation like this. Minimum wage, pensions and unionised public sector pay will rise accordingly and the rest of us will be fucked, again.

SwissEscape · 03/05/2026 21:22

@WaryCrow strange isn't it ! Other EU countries have separately done measures to ease pressure except ours ?
