Dread going back to work.

I work in a SEN school and on Friday I was given concussion by one of the children. It ended in a very long hospital visit (8 hours!) a CT scan etc. I feel tired and obviously in pain and I really love my job but I just have a feeling of dread of going back. Is that just the head injury talking?

Surely you need some time off with a head injury?
because being hurt, seriously hurt, in your line of work is not normal and shouldn’t be expected
I think you need to take some time to recover emotionally and physically

A&E said I should be well to go back on Tuesday. Personally I don't feel I will, I still feel nauseous and still shattered. I've emailed my line manager.

You can still call in sick Tuesday if you don’t feel up to it.

Do the circumstances surrounding the incident make you feel this way too?

I might request a change of class. Different class have different challenges.

Was it an accident or intentional harm by the child? I think that would be the most important factor going forward. But you definitely need time to physically recover.

I think I would call in Tuesday, tell them ehen you expect to be back and request a meeting to discuss it all before you return to the classroom, it is perfectly normal to be feel anxious.
Also make sure the accident at work form is filled out.

That's difficult to answer regarding a SEN child. The action was deliberate and he regularly hurts staff and children. If his mum has been told she will be unsympathetic and there will be no consequences for him.

I used to teach at an SEN school, and had several injuries requiring hospital treatment. I'll be honest, I lost my nerve in the end, and left teaching. Nobody should be seriously hurt doing their job, a fact which many SMT seem to not appreciate.

I can guarantee that the SMT will find a way to say it was my fault.

Of course. Apparently, staff should be able to prevent all dysregulation in all circumstances...
I wouldn't be rushing back. Take some time to think about what you want to do next. I'd also make sure your union is aware of this incident, even if you don't want them to do anything yet.

I bet this and your previous post has a lot more to do with the dread you feel .
