Anyone else found using a mooncup made periods easier to manage?

I've wanted to try a mooncup for years but have always chickened out.

This month, I decided was the time and oh my, what a game changer!

I used to soak through two pads but the mooncup has contained it. I still use a pad but it's VERY little bleeding on there. Bizarrely, I've found it's finished quicker than usual too.

Anybody else? 😊

Yes! It has made my periods much more manageable - and shorter too like you say! Not entirely sure what tampons were doing to our bodies given that fact?!

Crushed23 · 02/05/2026 14:28

No, but the mirena coil certainly did.

It definitely makes you wonder! I always 'flood' on day 2 but none of that since using either. Very weird.

No, I hate my mooncup, it's a total PITA but I use it for environmental reasons

Can I ask why you hate it? 🫣

Definitely made the flooding easier to manage.

I used a menstrual cup (not a moon cup) for a long time while I was in school. I had basically 0 cramps. Gave up as it was such a pain in the arse to try and boil it.

Shallotsaresmallonions · 02/05/2026 17:07

No, hated putting it in and taking it out, and hated having to use it in public bathrooms.

Glad you've found something that works for you though!

delna · 02/05/2026 17:14

I've used a menstrual cup for 20 years. I think it made my periods shorter. I find it easier than Tampax although I do use them if I'm not sure what Loos are available( I wouldn't clean a cup out at a sink where other people could see!). I've also never boiled one in my life ( I think the instructions say to sterilise at end of each period!).

sallymonella · 02/05/2026 17:19

I love mine, it made my periods so much easier to deal with.

SpinandSing · 02/05/2026 19:56

Menstrual disc is even better! You don’t even need to remove it to empty it and much more reliable for swimming and things like that. I loved the moon up at first but it has its limitations. Absolutely game changers though if you’ve only ever used tampons and pads.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 02/05/2026 20:00

It made periods easier but I started to get cystitis regularly so stopped using it. There was also an occasion when I struggled to find it!

Thecomfortador · 02/05/2026 20:10

Hated mine for years, then one day I accidentally chucked it in the bin by accident and I've been much happier ever since. It let me down too many times, especially at times when I really needed it not to, horrible messy faff to remove, just an all round ming fest.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/05/2026 20:14

I'm a fan of cups and washable pads.

I find cups much more comfortable than the drying effect of tampons, and the pads are just softer and more comfortable than their plasticy disposable counterparts.

An advantage of cups is that they can be used in anticipation of a period starting- handy when you have a job where you can't go to the toilet freely!

My body has a knack for menstruating when on holiday and I find cups handy for that, including going camping. I don't have to plan how many supplies I might need and can usually find access to wash the cup.

RosieHosie · 02/05/2026 20:16

I've used a menstrual cup for over 15 years and didn't notice any change. Think my periods are heavier than they used to be as I hit 50 last year. I wouldn't go back to tampons, but it can be messy. Luckily the loos at work are individual contained cubicles with their own sink. I've never boiled mine, but sterilise every few months when I remember. Might look into the disc a PP mentioned above.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/05/2026 20:16

I have also had far less cramping issues since moving away from disposables. I don't know if it's a co-incidence with my body changing after pregnancy/ birth though as I found out about them while using cloth nappies before my periods resumed.

Uncomfortable to wear, unreliable, messy, etc

curious79 · 02/05/2026 22:26

I wish I had tried one years earlier. Ultimately, I saved loads of money using one. It feels more hygienic. It’s super convenient.

reluctantbrit · 02/05/2026 22:43

I hated mine, uncomfortable after the initial heavy days, messy to change at work so useless for the majority of the period.

I moved to period pants 7 years ago and that was a game changer.

NoMoreSocks · 02/05/2026 22:50

Love mine. I wish they’d been a thing when I was younger. I used tampons from my first period and they let me down so many times.
Along with period pants as a belt and braces things are so much easier.

Chuffingcupboard · 02/05/2026 22:57

Used mine from 40-50 and wished I had found them sooner.
Less cramp, easier to manage, no soreness, much easier when travelling. Mine used to get a quick soak in Milton's to sterilise it. It didn't always get rinsed if I was out and about, just a quick wipe and put back.

FourCheese · 02/05/2026 23:04

Yes, once you learn how to fit it properly it’s very helpful.

I also still use (washable) pads, the point is to reduce the flow for me.

And it is messy, but you can leave it in for hours so meh.

Only downside is it’s useless at night and won’t stay in place.
