How much are you spending on petrol a week?

Flatinbed · 02/05/2026 09:46

I realised that I had filled up exactly 7 days apart (sat am to sat am). It cost me £22 (5 year old petrol golf).

I figured out that I did just under a 100 miles of mostly city driving. Work, supermarket, odd trip.

How much are you spending?

Diesel not petrol. Filled up on Wednesday evening from a very very empty tank. Cost £95. Should last around 4 weeks.

BooseysMom · 02/05/2026 18:20

I drive 24 miles a day for work x3 p/w and have a small older car. It's costing around £120 p/m. All the local short journeys don't help. We're in a rural village and have to have a car.

Thissideof40 · 02/05/2026 18:32

My car usually cost £57 to fill up (1.5 petrol) but it cost me £70 yesterday. That will last me about a week and a half with a 16 mile round trip for work each day:

WanderingWellies · 02/05/2026 18:33

I’ve just filled up (diesel engine) and it’s cost me £85. Pre-Iran war it was usually £60-65 depending on how empty the tank was. I do mainly town driving and a tank lasts less than a month. If we have a day out anywhere that’s more than 30 minutes away it’ll be gone in 3 weeks. I could cry…and I know mine’s cheap compared to people with long commutes.

Zuve · 02/05/2026 18:38

Oh, every two weeks, and it costs £23. We do about 120 a week. So, it's doable

minicooperpooperscooper · 02/05/2026 18:56

1.5 petrol engine costs me £50 every 2 weeks, I know this isn't much compared to some but my old car was a 1.0 petrol and really good on fuel, it was £37 every 3 weeks! I couldn't have picked a worse time to change my car, I put the deposit down the day after the Iran war started!

ifonly4 · 02/05/2026 18:58

Keeping ours a bit more topped up recently, cost £35 for 23 litres in the week.

DH can't drive right now for health reasons, I only need to drive to work once a week, so it's only costing us about £12 a week for short journeys to town/garden centre/my work/day trip. I do all our grocery shopping on foot, so that helps.

TheDandyLion · 02/05/2026 19:07

Last time filled up with diesel was end of Feb. Filled up the tank for £60 still have 1/8th tank left. The time before that was October. I suppose that averages out to about £5 per week. I haven't yet bought anything since the prices went bonkers.

FormerCautiousLurker · 02/05/2026 19:16

Half a tank a week, about £45 a pop currently (does 200miles). Still got one DC at home about to start A levels, so parental ubering and cannot reduce usage until end of June. At which time my usage should drop to one tank every 8 weeks!

REDB99 · 02/05/2026 19:22

Why are you filling up your tank? It’s nowhere near empty if it’s only costing you £22 to fill it up.

Mushroom2023 · 02/05/2026 19:37

I can't believe how cheap everyone else's fuel prices are!!

I WFH full-time, but ds2 lives mainly with his dad, so I make a 200 mile round trip to pick him up and drop him off each week. Costs me about £50/week.

I don't resent paying it as it means time with ds2, but I do wish ex-h might look to share some of the driving (not a chance -he's not a man you reason with). For full transparency - ex-h is the one that moved.

PartyAnimalQueen · 02/05/2026 19:43

Bike (125cc) - I’ve spent about £40 this month (petrol) - but I’ve done around 500 miles (2 full tanks)

Car (2L Citroen grand Picasso) currently only using for school run - and only done half of them this month) - £40 (diesel) - this wasn’t a full tank either 🤦🏼‍♀️ to fill the tank it’s around £100 atm

I live less than 3 miles from work. The only long journeys I do are for pleasure rather than necessity.

I don't think I've ever done more than a 60 mile round trip in my car lol.

Notmyreality · 02/05/2026 19:54

What an utterly pointless thread.

Once ds2 goes to university in September I'll probably do even less than that since I WFH, so no commuting costs.

In the meantime, I'm torn between it's a lot of money to find and otoh I only have a limited amount of time before he's grown wings and will be gone to enjoy his company. I'm learning to just enjoy every moment before it's too late and fuck the fuel prices!

Maybe OP is budgeting and wouldn't want a £100 bill each month, bit like how people pay for things in instalments

My commute is literally just from the kitchen to my home office in the next room.

Aside from collecting and dropping ds2 I live in a village which has everything within walking distance and I do my supermarket shop online, dp is cycling (definitely not walking) distance away. The only time I use the car is social visits and taking the dog for a walk somewhere different for a change.

KurtCobainLover · 02/05/2026 20:21

I fill up once a month and it costs me £50. I only make short journeys though and tend to walk everywhere if I can.

NoDramas · 02/05/2026 20:27

I filled up last week approx £96 for 50ish litres of diesel. I expect that to give me 600-650 miles which is about a month’s worth of my routine travelling.

Spending close to £100 was a bit ouchy to say the least. Pre this current situation it was around £70 give or take.

cobrakaieaglefang · 02/05/2026 20:31

Currently less than £20 per week. Cycle commute to work ( 9 miles round trip) 3-5 times a week ( weather dependent)
Car for commute 1-2 times, shopping, appointments and sports training 2-3 times a week.

Natsku · 02/05/2026 20:36

I drive a minimum of 220km a week (commute, but realistically more like 240 or 250 a week with other trips) and need to fill up every 7-10 days, don't wait until the tank is nearly empty now but put in 60 euros each time. Thankfully I can claim a good chunk of that back from my taxes

Why is it unbelievable? People who spend less on fuel won't be driving 200 miles a week.

They might also have a smaller car.

It's like when people say 'I wish my mortgage was as low as your's' without considering that a smaller mortgage buys a smaller house, that's not as well decorated and in a less desirable area.

Use your car more and/or have a bigger car and it costs more to run.

Littlebitpsycho · 02/05/2026 20:41

Damn I'm jealous of all these low costs, my car costs the best part of £180 to fill up with the wild diesel prices at the moment, that gets me around 500 miles which lasts about 10 days if I'm careful. Filled up OHs old rover estate to drive to wales today to visit my in-laws, that cost over £110 and might get me to work for a few days afterwards 🤦‍♀️

SnackcidentProne · 02/05/2026 20:58

Diesel car around £100 and petrol car about 50..
