One armed meal ideas

We have family coming this weekend for lunch. A great aunt has a frozen shoulder and essentially eats one handed. I'd like a meal which she can eat, rather than needing it chopped up. No diet restrictions but not lasagne or trifle. I was thinking a sliced meat with mash and veg then a mousse but any ideas appreciated.

A fish pie would be great for this

Cottage pie. Bung peas, sweetcorn, carrots, mushrooms and onions into it and mashed swede in with the potato topping and you won't need to add any other veg.

lamb or chicken tagine with the meat in small pieces and couscous

I have disabilities that often leaves me with very one hand and that hand also has limited mobility and I also suffer with frozen shoulder on a regular basis, rheumatoid arthritis and severe carpal tunnel show their faces a lot too and I’d like to say you’re really thoughtful for taking this into consideration.

I use a pasta bowl now for every meal as the raised sides mean I can kind of use the raised edge as support for getting food into my fork and it also stops me accidently knocking bits off the edge of my plate.

Some of the meals that I enjoy is

Vegetable/chicken fried rice. (In a pasta bowl so that I can get every bit)
curry and rice
Stir fry.
Pasta bake.
mash/veg/
soup/stew/casserole/broth
fish such salmon I can also manage without a knife.

Desserts- I like cheesecake, sponge cake and custard as that can be cut with a spoon easily, ice cream.

Some finger foods, maybe not for the main course but profiteroles or cheese and biscuits to finish.

Maybe a burger and chips that can be eaten with fingers. If the weather is good then a BBQ?

Something made with mince, a curry or, as has already mentioned, cottage pie, fish pie etc.

Tortellini

Anything that is 'fork food'. I love fork food! Cottage pie, fish pie, stew, goulash, curry, tuna macaroni, boeuf bourguinon, anything with bite sized pieces or which is mushy. Those are some of my favourites, but there will be loads of others! Mash is good, rice is OK (can be tricky) pasta shapes rather than long pasta. I suggest veg that is in pieces, like carrots, rather than in strips like cabbage.

For dessert - yes mousse is nice but she might prefer something with a bit of texture. Cake, trifle, fruit crumble, even treacle tart! Most desserts are fork (or spoon) friendly I think. Cheesecake perhaps?

Slow cooked chilli with chunks of beef rather than mince.

Any stew.

Tortellini type pasta

Cottage / shepherds pie

Any pastry pie.

Thank you everyone, there have been some great suggestions.

@DilemmaDelilah 'Fork food' is excellent and the exact term I'd been looking for to describe what I want- thank you.

If you can, it might be worth getting a non slip mat to put under the plate, or a damp tea towel or similar. I found that a useful recommendation when I had my arm in a sling and was chasing food round my plate one handed!

Posh cottage pie, with red wine, orange juice, rosemary, topped with a root vegetable mash with dijon mustard and a strong mature cheddar grated on the top. A few tomato slices on top as well are nice.

Edited for typo.

Butternut squash and sage risotto

LIZS · 02/05/2026 21:57

Been there, done that! Go for something with fork sized pieces or soft like fish pie, stew with diced meat and chopped veg, curry and rice, pasta bake using farfalle or fusilli, bourguinon or stroganoff. Maybe a crumble for dessert or fruit salad. Is it her dominant side affected? Eating can be a slow and tiring process,

Paella would work, I think.

I am no help sorry - I read your title as 'one armed meal deals'🤣
I did wonder just how much money the supermarket thought they could make from this wonderful offer.

That would be a great ide for a café. For some with temporary or permenant disabilities and those with velcro babies.

A section of the menu that can be eaten one handed.
