I was reported to police for something the person only knows one of my surnames as I only use one but the police obviously know who I was as they called my mobile

You can't be that worried about it if you're posting on this thread and another thread about buying something off Vinted at the same time.

mindutopia · 01/05/2026 17:49

Police have access to a database that allows them to locate people by name, number and address and probably some other information. If you’ve ever used your other name for anything publicly, it will probably be associated with your legal name. If not, it will still be easy to find you doing a quick internet search, with will allow them to cross reference to your legal name.

I filed a police report against someone for harassment. I had his name and the village he lived in. Police were easily able to find his phone number and address. In his case, I would not have been surprised if he had an existing record, but he would have been easy for them to look up.

@Tillow4ever , I’m not sure you should be posting them. I did it with someone years back and was told by MNHQ that it is potentially doxing someone.

Tillow4ever · 01/05/2026 17:56

Oh sorry, I didn’t realise! It feels like we are missing big parts of what’s going on, and if it’s the sane person the bigger picture might help us advise.

Butterme · 01/05/2026 17:58

Someone would have your number and would have given it to them.

It may well be the same person. But, unless we actually know for sure it’s probably best not to share images

houseofisms · 01/05/2026 17:59

The local police called my partner yesterday so say his wallet had been handed in (he didn’t know he had lost it 🙄) driving liscence etc on there but no idea how they got his number. Never had any dealings with police before

Studyunder · 01/05/2026 18:21

Well, as it’s their actual job to detect people I assume they’re well practiced in their methods……🤷🏼‍♀️

Presumably the bloke on the phone had a Geordie accent and a really high pitched voice.

Shoulder number

It's very dependent on the offence you're accused of
If it's something on social media they could have traced you through the SM company (unlikely)
If any cars are involved they could have searched through cars
They could have you saved as a known person through intel or you might be an associate of someone whose details are saved with police

You could be on the police national database for one incident and this is accessible by other forces

Do you want to tell us more detail?

Franpie · 01/05/2026 18:35

I was called by the police many years ago as someone had reported that my dog bit them whilst my nanny was walking the dog.

I have no idea how they got my number and how they tracked me down and they wouldn’t tell me either. All very odd. My nanny also denied my dog bit this person but they were able to show me a picture that had been taken of the back of my dog and nanny so it wasn’t a case of mistaken identity.

I guess they have their ways and means.

Yes but wouldn’t I be saved with my full name? I’ve had involvement with them due to mental health related incidents.

Why do you have multiple names? You can only have 1 legal name

It's not illegal to use an alias - although pretty hard to these days

Monzo1ss · 01/05/2026 20:07

This is such a stupid question

it’s the police! they have the maximum amount of power and data to access to find people subject to an investigation

if they can figure out when people go by fake names etc or no name, what makes you think they can’t figure out who you are just bc they only had “one” of your names?

JanefromLondon1 · 01/05/2026 20:11

You don’t need someone’s whole name, type on first name and one surname and it’ll bring up a list of people and dons and if you have rough area it’s easy to narrow it down to the right person.

I have posted about this before.

I was walking along when a man run in front of me and jumped the school fence (this was 16 odd years ago, when schools were less secure). A second man chased after him… stopped, shouted a question to me (“what road are we on?”). I told him, then he said, “Police”, flashed a warrant card (could have been his Blockbusters Video card for all I knew), and asked if I had a phone. I passed mine over (why, just why?), and he made a couple of calls, with no answers, then said, “I have to take your phone.” He then run off with my phone, and jumped the school fence, disappearing from view.

At this point I realised I’d just been scammed.

Only, I hadn’t been. My phone was returned that night by a uniformed officer, with a bag of stickers, etc. for my kids. I have no idea how they traced me.

You can use more than one name. Thousands of authors and people in the performing arts do exactly that all the time, for example.

HMRC and the passport office will use your legal name, but you can go by whatever other names you like unless you are doing it for criminal reasons.
