Would you risk washing a dry clean only cotton coat?

I have a 100% cotton coat from New Look with a polyester lining. The label says Dry Clean Only - would you risk washing it at 30 degrees?

Personally I would. Might depend on the type of weave of the cotton. Show us a pic, including close up of fabric?

ChaToilLeam · 01/05/2026 15:02

I'd wash it at a cool temperature and on a gentle programme, or by hand. I wonder if the cotton night shrink though. Does it have any kind of special finish?

TheChosenTwo · 01/05/2026 15:06

Yes. I have only a handful of things that I take to the dry cleaners now.

Yup, cool/ wool wash, short low spin, don't tumble dry but stick on a hanger

Having said that I have a embroidered/embellished coat that's dry clean only and only gets dry cleaned.

But for 'normal ' coats fine. I've just taken my two winter dry clean only everyday coats out of the washer ready to pack away for summer.

I'd use the gentlest machine setting and if it didn't make it, so be it. It's survival of the fittest round here.

I would but I'm a massive adrenaline junkie.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 01/05/2026 15:08

I tend to put everything through the machine. If it looks really delicate I put it in a bag or pillow case and if it's dry clean only I wash on a 30 degree cycle. Never lost a garment yet!

Lomonald · 01/05/2026 15:09

Yes I would wash it, i wash all my jackets that are dry clean only.

EmiliaBassano · 01/05/2026 15:10

Here it is. No special finish really, I don't think it's meant to be a raincoat or anything. The cat has been sitting on it though.

If it’s not very special and you would not be devastated if it got spoiled, I’d pop that on a silks/handwash setting in my machine with silk/wool wash at 30 and hang it up straight afterwards.

I do have some Woolite in the cupboard so I'll try it.

Good luck - may the washing machine gods be kind to you!

Feralbookworm · 01/05/2026 15:58

I always wash dry clean only stuff. Low temperature and low spin. Haven’t ruined anything yet. Fingers crossed for you.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/05/2026 16:35

I would think the risk might be creasing, ironing a coat may not be very satisfactory especially sleeves. If I decided to wash it I’d probably do it by hand in the bath, let it drip a bit and then blot it between towels before hanging it to dry.

@didntlikeanyofthesuggestions 🤣
