You had a blocked nose, blocked ears, sore throat and felt generally exhausted?

I could probably force myself to but don’t think it will do me any good.

I never take time off and am rarely ill. So that’s why I find it hard to make a decision.

Depends what you do. If it's for a meeting about projected sales then no. If you have 1000 people who have booked tickets to see you perform mime and you'd let all those crazy bastards down then I'd take some ibuprofen and suck it up.

Customer facing. Probably not a great idea. But I hate letting people down!

HR where I work are very clear on not wanting people to come in & spread their germs.

I take a day off if I know that if I stayed home I would be in bed all day and not be getting up to do little jobs around the house, washing, hoovering etc. if I think I’d manage to do some jobs then I haul arse into work.
But I sit at a desk with no one next to me and can keep myself quite isolated and although I do wfh I also have set days where I need to be in the office so don’t have the total flexibility to say I’ll wfh if I’m feeling a bit coldy or whatever.
I’ve been in this job 4 years and had 2 days off sick with migraines so I generally get myself in if feeling a bit run down.

Morepositivemum · 01/05/2026 06:40

I only don’t come in if it’s very obvious eg coughing, sneezing, talking like you’re blocked up. But in our work if you couldn’t walk they’d help lift you in, days off are very much frowned upon 😅

I work in a school you’d be expected in - attendance is everything teachers and students.

You’d be letting them down by getting them sick. Take the day off for once and spare everyone the germs and a ruined weekend. 🙂

Agree. Please don’t share with others.

In my work tends to be only thing not frowned upon is calling in… dead.

Head in and if not manageable and perks you up get sent home, least it shows an effort.

Pugglywuggly · 01/05/2026 07:44

Yes. Everyone always says not to come in if you're unwell to stop the spread, but practically it doesn't work like that. So unless I can't get off the toilet or I'm unable to even loll on the sofa I'm at work. Time off for a stuffy head is a bit of a joke really.

I am so glad I’m not a teacher or student in the UK, if you can’t stay at home when you are sick or take time off. What a sad life.

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/05/2026 09:11

No, if I’m working from home I’d check in on stuff but I wouldn’t drag myself to the office. Taking a day to recover might mean you can fight it off more quickly, rather than it dragging on and I’d not want to infect everyone else.

MagpiePi · 01/05/2026 09:11

Stay at home!

The company isn’t going to collapse because you’re not there and you’ll still get paid.
