Ages on lego sets? (Lightning mcqueen lego specifically)

Hi all. Recently started buying lego just before my son turned 4 (for christmas and his birthday) he's had duplo but moved up to older lego now

All his sets have been 4+ etc and i help him build he can't fully do them alone but loves the building the playing the displaying

And i do too! If I had more space id most certainly get sets myself to build and display🤣

Tomorrow we're going into our local shopping centre as it was my birthday recently and I said him and his sister can pick something with my birthday money (she's 2 so it wont be lego haha) and he wants to pick lego

He is Lightning mcqueen obsessed and has seen that set before. It says 9+ and when I googled it they give ages to the sets based on piece count/difficulty

I obviously dont mind doing most the building if it's tough as its an activity we do together we love it

I just wanted to ask any advanced lego builders really, does this ages matter? If I'll be helping and im certainly over 9 haha! He's getting a lego shelf for his room to display some :) but I just wanted to ask about the ages on them before we go to the shop

It will be fine, hope you both have fun!

OP, if he wants to do it himself, he might well be frustrated by a 9+ set. If he can’t do a 4+ set alone, where the instructions are super-clear, then he won’t be able to cope with 9+. You might as well buy it and present him with the finished thing after you have made it, which rather defeats the point of lego.

If you are helping him build then it's fine.

I'm an adult and have some 9+ kits. He will certainly be able to do some of it but be prepared to help him quite a bit. I'm sure he will love the end result. I love sitting with my children building. Have fun 😊
Ps lovely that you're giving them your birthday money too.

Yes I wont leave him with the manual and say go on! Haha

I just wanted to double check as long as I'm helping its all okay , he hasn't picked yet but I have a feeling he'll be drawn to the lightning mcqueen or a certain marvel set that's 6+! So both a little older but mainly the cars one he'll want

I just wanted to say how lovely it is that you are all discovering Lego together! I have exhausted all the display space I can squeeze out of the house for now, so I am eagerly looking forward to the time I retire (hopefully only 5 years now) and I can turn my home office into a dedicated LEGO room! Once the bug gets you it’s insatiable!

The age is just difuclty, at that age id buy whatever set my son picked, and then id just do more myself if it was a harder (older set) or less for younger sets... 4+ sets are great, and don't take too long until kids can do them.

For bigger sets, what I used to do was open 2 bags, like bag 1 and 2, and then my son would build all the little figures and men and then 'creative build' with bag 2, while I build the model from bag 1.. etc.

Or you can try being the "finder" and them the "builder.. where you find and lay out the pecies for each page and they put it together. That makes it go quicker which keeps their focus better.

Also displaying is nice... But don't loose the creativity. One of the best things about Lego is that after you have built it once, you can take it apart and build anything. My son has built all sorts from the sets that we have had... And now he is a little older we have lots of story games where all the figures team up, good guys, bad guys... Building bases and houses for them and transport for them, having battles etc.

It is often the small pieces and stickers which are taken into account.

I see you're buying your kids rhings with your birthday money op. Is there nothing you want for yourself? Mum's so often gey overlooked and spend money on everyone else, I feel your birthday money should be spent on you.
