Neighbour next door causing vibrations in my flat and making me feel unwell. Has anyone experienced this?

Has anyone experienced this? I feel like I'm going insane.

I've lived in my flat for the last 8 years. No issues. It's a one bed flat on first floor. There's an identical flat next door and 2 below us. No one above. Oldish building, timber floors.

Last December new neighbours moved in next door. Shortly after I started getting vibrations into my flat that cause:

-Motion sickness
-Funny feeling in my ears
-Dizziness
-Almost like a seasick feeling
-Heavy chest

It's not neurological as it stops when I step outside. It's definitely tied to their activity. It stops when they're out. I lived with the neighbours below for years and there's no change in their flats so I don't think it's them. Not internal either as I turned off electricity to test, my carbon monoxide detector works fine etc.

2 friends confirmed they feel it too when they're around. I had a chat with the next door and they don't know what might be causing it. They don't seem to have anything unusual in their flat that might cause this.

Has anyone experienced anything like this at all?! What might be causing this?

Do they listen to loud music, could be a subwoofer?

PrincessFluffyPants · 29/04/2026 21:44

Fish tank or fridge? vibrations...?

JeopardyLeopardy · 29/04/2026 21:46

Oh how awful! I used to go into a shop which had weird vibrating in one area and I felt the same sickness. I don't know what it was, it felt like a generator but could have been the lighting? Does yours seem like an electrical thing? I used to have a strip light in the kitchen and could hear it buzzing in the room above, but it didn't vibrate. Can you feel it in all rooms or just ones with adjoining walls?

DierdreDaphne · 29/04/2026 21:47

Perhaps consult an acoustician. They might have experience of this effect and equipment that can identify the frequency. When you say 'vibrations' are you sensing these in your body or can you hear them?

swapsicles · 29/04/2026 21:47

Fish tank pumps can vibrate a lot, doubtful it'd be heard in a neighbours house though.
If it's constant it's something like a fridge, extractor fan or pump. If it's only a certain times they it'd be easier to pin down.
Also do you have neighbours to the side or diagonally if in a block, it might not be the neighbour you think!

I don't hear any music, but from my Google search, it says bass from subwoofers is 'felt' rather than 'heard' so might be it. They say they don't own one but I'm not sure. Can it be felt from everywhere though? I feel it even away from the shared wall.

When I was at a music festival once I could feel the bass from the speaker in my chest. Made me feel sick. My friend was the same.

Infrasound! Features on TV/radio prog Uncanny.

Could be machinery of some sort.

Lavender14 · 29/04/2026 21:51

Would it be their washing machine op?

Mumteedum · 29/04/2026 21:51

Dehumidifier? Something like that?

Iriseyes · 29/04/2026 21:52

Dehumidifier?

BridgetJonesV2 · 29/04/2026 21:55

I bet they've got a soundbox on their TV - we've got one downstairs on our Sky Box, and when I go to bed at night I have to put it onto the "late night" setting as I could sense the vibrations and it stops me from being able to fall asleep. DH is partly deaf and clueless... but it makes me feel very agitated.

Parsnip74 · 29/04/2026 21:55

I have spoken with their property manager and he wants me to point out the exact thing that's causing it. Well I don't know!!

He claims to have sent a boiler engineer to the property and the engineer confirmed nothing was awry apparently.

Is my best bet calling in an electrician so he can take a look?

Can you ask them to switch on appliances one at a time so you can identify what triggers it ? If it’s jus when they are in then it must be something they are switching on

Mumteedum · 29/04/2026 21:58

Would have thought you need to know what electrical items they have. Can't be the fridge or freezer if it stops when they're out. They're switching something on and off that causes it.

Tricky.

Mumteedum · 29/04/2026 22:00

Aircon?

I was thinking it’s definitely not their fridge or something like that, as it goes off when they’re out.

my vote is with pp’s suggestion of sound box on tv.

Smallorveryfaraway · 29/04/2026 22:09

If it's only when they are home, then it's something they are switching on when they are in the house. And it's pretty constant, so rules out things that would be used intermittently like kitchen appliances. Does it stop overnight?
If yes then it has to be TV or sound system. If no then it's something then are running all the time when home, like an air conditioner or air purifier.

There is the possibility that it's not them and the timing is coincidental. Have you tried being in their flat when it's happening to see if it's stronger or still happening there when it's happening in your flat? And the same with the other neighbours flats? It could be external. Are you near any long term building works, HS2 for example?

SeriouslyStressed · 29/04/2026 22:12

An air purifier?

WhatWouldDianeLockhartDo · 29/04/2026 22:15

Are they growing weed and that’s why they claim to not know what you mean?

It stops overnight which does make me think it's a TV but it could also be a dehumidifier they turn off before bed

Haha I'm definitely getting shady vibes from them but it could just be that they don't want to deal with it. They're very dismissive. I'd be definitely more helpful if they came to me with a similar issue.

Yes. With my neighbour it’s the sound bar on their tv in their living room on the far side of the house. Doesn’t affect dh. I can’t hear it but I can feel it. I know as soon as he’s put it on. We are a halls together semi with our living rooms on the far side of the house from each other. I can even feel it upstairs in bed bedroom at the far side back of the house. It makes me feel ill.

Thingsthatgo · 29/04/2026 22:25

The things is even if you do work out what it is, will they change their use of the item? If you came to me and said that my dehumidifier is making you feel funny, I would still need to use my dehumidifier, and it wouldn’t be unreasonable of me to do so.
Can you afford to buy them replacement items to experiment with?

JulietteHasAGun · 29/04/2026 22:28

With my neighbour thankfully he doesn’t use the soundbar much, just when he watches a movie. I did ask him if he could please shut his living room door when he uses it,,,,,explaining why. I must admit I cringe a bit that I asked him this but I was desperate. It seemed to reduce for a while but I do notice it still every now and then. I believe there are anti vibration mats which help, dont know if you could buy some for your neighbour?
