Ear infection (no pain) but vertigo: how long does the dizziness usually last?

Never had anything like it before but a few days ago all of a sudden felt light headed, then was sick. Spent the next day in bed, every time got up or tried to eat I would be sick. Pharmacist says is likely an ear infection and has recommended stugeron tablets which have got rid of the nausea so am feeling much better but am very unsteady on my feet. How long is that likely to last?! Luckily no physical ear pain but this is just nasty!

Google Labyrinthitis. Sounds like that.

Or Ménière’s disease

I’m hoping it’s “just” an ear infection like labrynththithis or bpvv. But just wondered how long the worst lasts. Google says potentially months, bloody hope not!!

6-12 weeks according to GP.

However, it can vary. I've had it between one day and 5 months so far. Most bouts have been short. Quite worried about this one as it is quite long.

Urgh really hope not. I can’t drive or even walk anywhere that isn’t completely flat!!

I had something like this. The worst was over within a week but took two weeks to feel normal

See you GP for Betahistine tablets if that's not what you've got. (Don't know all the brand names)

I was laid flat out for 2 weeks with labyrinthitis. Felt awful.
Still dizzy and struggled with balancing for a couple of months afterwards.

As you mention bvvp, have you tried doing the Epley manoeuvre? There are lots of videos showing how to do this at home

Yes I had come upon that in my googling. Will give it a try in a few days if not feeling better. Thank you!

It can take a long time to clear. The first time I had it, it took six weeks. The really bad news is that you may be more prone to it happening.
Your gp can give you a referral to a physiotherapist who specialises in vertigo/ dizziness. You do exercises that provoke your symptoms and improve your balance and hand/eye coordination 3 times a day. You can find some on the internet but I’ve found it better to see the dizzy doctor.

I’ve had a couple of bouts of this recently - 2-3 days really bad, then “functioning” but still feeling slightly like I’ve just got off a boat.
Being outside helps me, driving was ok as I was looking into the distance
no sudden turns of the head or movements up or down though and plenty of rests

it's bloody frustrating when you have lots to be getting on with - I felt like I’d been hobbled!

but had to reframe it as life telling me to pause and take a breath - stop rushing so much etc etc

henlake7 · 30/04/2026 17:21

I started off the year with something similar. Really bad for the first week then it took about 6 weeks for it to 'go'.
But TBH it was more like 3-4 mths before I stopped getting that swooping/spinning sensation if I turned my head wrong (by that point though it manageable enough).
