Oh well

Russian tourists who thought it was a good idea to holiday in occupied Crimea are complaining that they can’t get back to the motherland because of fuel rationing caused by Ukrainian strikes on energy infrastructure.

Live:Ukraine

🔷 Special Operations Forces attacked an oil depot and a terminal in Crimea overnight.

Specifically, the "Semykolodezyanska" oil depot in the settlement of Yedy-Kuyu (referred to by the Russians as Lenino) was hit. Russian forces use it for storing and transshipping fuel.

This oil depot has 9 tanks with capacities ranging from 700 to 3,000 cubic meters. There, tank cars are loaded and transported across Crimea and other occupied territories of Ukraine to supply Russian troops.

The Special Operations Forces also struck a marine oil terminal in Feodosia. The facility has 7 fuel tanks with capacities of 10,000 and 20,000 cubic meters.

🔶 The IAEA will visit the spent nuclear fuel storage facility in the Chornobyl exclusion zone following the Russian attack.

The agency received information about the attack from Ukraine. It is known that the fuel reception building on the territory of the storage facility has been severely damaged.

Radiation levels at the storage facility remain within established limits.

🔷 The Armed Forces of Ukraine struck a bridge in the Chonhar area — the Russians halted traffic through their so-called "Dzhankoi checkpoint."

This bridge is one of the key routes between occupied Crimea and the temporarily occupied territories of southern Ukraine. Its strike has complicated the logistics of Russian military forces.

🔶 President Volodymyr Zelensky conveyed a proposal for a meeting to Putin on May 21 through Russian businessman Roman Abramovich, the FT writes, citing sources.

Two Ukrainian senior officials told the FT that the content of the message was similar to Zelensky's open letter to Putin, which was published on the website of the Presidential Office on June 4.

The FT notes that Abramovich previously helped facilitate talks between Russia and Ukraine in 2022. In particular, he helped broker the deal that ensured the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

On June 5, Putin claimed that a Russian businessman (the dictator did not name him) supposedly traveled to Kyiv to meet with Zelensky, where the Ukrainian president requested a meeting with Putin.

🔷 Collapse at Russian Sochi airport: thousands of passengers unable to depart due to drone attacks

Since June 5, Sochi airport has been operating with serious disruptions amid Ukrainian drone attacks. Thousands of passengers have been unable to leave the resort city for several days.

According to online flight boards, dozens of departing and arriving flights are delayed, and some flights have been canceled. People are complaining about an overcrowded terminal: there are no free seats left, passengers are sitting and lying on the floor, using towels and travel mats as bedding.

🔷 President Zelensky's letter to Putin, the Russian strike on Chornobyl NPP, and a prisoner exchange. The week's top stories.

Zelensky wrote an open letter to Putin and proposed a meeting to end the war. In response, Putin said he had read the letter but "sees no point" in a meeting between the leaders.

The Russians struck the spent nuclear fuel storage site at the Chornobyl NPP. A drone partially destroyed the container reception building. A fire broke out and was extinguished. The SBU opened a war crimes investigation.

On June 5, another 185 military personnel and one civilian were returned to Ukraine from Russian captivity. Among those freed were soldiers, sergeants, and officers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the National Guard, and the State Border Guard Service.

On the night of June 6, Ukrainian drones attacked St. Petersburg — targeting Russian Navy arsenals and the base at the port of Kronstadt, approximately 1,000 kilometers from Ukraine.

A Swedish court ruled that the seizure of the cargo ship Caffa in the Baltic Sea was legal and allowed it to be transferred to Ukraine. The vessel is suspected of illegally transporting grain from territories temporarily occupied by Russia.

🇬🇧🇺🇦🇫🇷🇩🇪 The leaders of Britain, Ukraine, France, and Germany agreed on the main terms of peace between Ukraine and Russia during a meeting in London:

about:blank 🔴An immediate and complete ceasefire. President Volodymyr Zelensky, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called on Putin to agree to this.

about:blank 🔴The starting point for negotiations — the current front line. Internationally recognized borders cannot be changed by force, and Ukraine has the right to choose its own security alliances.

about:blank 🔴Ukraine must be provided with reliable legal security guarantees after the war ends, including the deployment of multinational military forces.

about:blank 🔴Frozen Russian assets must remain frozen until the war ends and until Russia compensates Ukraine for the damage it has caused.

about:blank 🔴Future decisions in any peace agreement related to the EU and NATO may only be made with the consent of the member states of the European Union and the Alliance.

🔶 The Russians attacked Ukraine with 155 drones; air defense neutralized 124 targets. Here is what is known about the aftermath of the attacks:

Odesa. Two people waiting for transportation at a bus stop were injured in the Russian attack. They were hospitalized with shrapnel wounds.

Sumy region. In the morning, the Russian army attacked residential buildings in Konotop. In one of the five-story buildings, three people were wounded and are now in the hospital. Rescue workers are searching for at least one more person under the rubble.

Kharkiv. The Russians struck a Ukrposhta hub overnight — the building was partially destroyed. No casualties have been reported. A fire broke out covering an area of 1,000 square meters.

🔷 The National Police prevented an assassination attempt on one of the heads of a unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of the Ministry of Defense and detained an agent of Russian special services.

According to the investigation, a 38-year-old Kyivan was recruited by Russian special services and promised 10,000) as an advance.

The police said that the suspect studied the official's travel routes, schedule, place of residence, and the vehicle he uses. After gathering information, he decided to organize the assassination using an FPV drone and began searching for a drone operator to carry it out.

The man was detained by operatives and is suspected of preparation for murder. The maximum penalty is life.

🔶 The Ukrainian military struck oil depots in occupied Crimea and an FSB control point in the Belgorod region, the General Staff reported.

Specifically, Ukrainian units hit the "Semykolodezyanska" oil depot in the settlement of Yedy-Kuyu in Crimea, where a fire broke out. An ammunition depot in the Donetsk region was also attacked.

The Ukrainian military also struck the Feodosia oil terminal, which transships up to 10–12 million tons of petroleum products per year.

In addition, Ukraine hit areas where Russian military personnel are stationed in the Shchastia area of the Luhansk region and the Blahodatne area of the Donetsk region.

Russian Telegram channels also report about fifty explosions following a nighttime drone attack in Novorossiysk. The "Grushovaya" oil depot — the largest oil storage facility in the Caucasus — caught fire there.

🇲🇩During the Russian attack on Ukraine, a drone fell in Moldova, the country's Ministry of Defense reported.

The drone crossed the border at 00:20. Later, the drone exploded, and its debris was found on an agricultural field near the village of Lopatna.

Moldova's Ministry of Defense stated that they do not yet know whose drone it was, but they are examining the wreckage. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reported that the drone was Russian.

At the same time, Moldova's Foreign Ministry stated that the drone most likely belongs to Ukraine. Despite this, the ministry does not blame Ukraine, as Russia is the one that started the war.

⚡️NATO fighters shot down a drone over Latvia for the first time.

According to Latvian military officials, the drone entered the country's airspace due to Russian electronic warfare operations. It was destroyed by French fighter jets that are patrolling Baltic skies as part of a NATO mission. Whose drone it was has not been specified.

According to DELFI, an "orange" air alert warning was issued in several eastern districts of Latvia as a result of the incident.

🔷 In May, the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated more territory than they lost — the difference is approximately 100 km², reported Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi.

He says the situation on the front is dynamic: the Russians are pressing in the east and south, and there are more battles now. The fiercest fighting is currently on the Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka, and Huliaipole directions.

Syrskyi adds that since the beginning of the year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have already liberated over 600 km².

United 24 Media:
☢️ Ukraine informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about a drone strike on the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant.

According to the agency, the IAEA team stationed at the site will soon inspect the facility and assess the consequences of the attack.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia deliberately targeted this nuclear infrastructure facility.

⚡️ Angela Merkel said she has been asked for advice on negotiating with Putin.

The former German chancellor made the remarks in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper.

“I know from my own experience that you can negotiate with the president of the Russian Federation only if you have political power. In a democracy, that power is granted only for a limited period. Neither François Hollande nor I would have asked someone else to negotiate with Putin in Minsk on our behalf. Today, this is also the responsibility of those who have power and legitimacy. But that does not mean I keep my knowledge to myself when someone asks me for advice,” Merkel said.

When asked who had sought her advice, she declined to answer.

“I won’t tell you that. But it is already happening,” Merkel said.

The former chancellor also reiterated that, in response to the threat posed by Russia, Europe should not only strengthen its defense capabilities but also engage in diplomacy and maintain direct contacts with Moscow rather than leaving that role solely to the United States.

“I consider it insufficient for only the United States to maintain contact with Russia. In 2021, President Biden met with Putin in Geneva. At my final formal meeting of the European Council, I said that we should not leave this task to the US president alone. It directly affects European interests. That is why I proposed that the European Union develop its own format for such contacts. At the time, it did not work. Some argued that we did not have a unified policy toward Russia. My response was that we should continue meeting until we do,” Merkel said.

🤔 Russians close the Chongar checkpoint after a Ukrainian drone attack

Russian authorities have closed the Chongar checkpoint following a Ukrainian drone strike.

Reports also indicate that traffic through the Dzhankoi checkpoint has been suspended. According to preliminary information, the bridge deck was damaged during the attack.

☢️ Russia deliberately struck the Centralized Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Facility near the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, Zelenskyy said.

“Today, the Russians once again attacked the special zone around the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant. A Shahed drone hit one of the buildings of the spent nuclear fuel storage facility — an extremely important piece of infrastructure. It was an exceptionally cynical Russian strike.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Energy, and all relevant services are already working to ensure that all our partners are informed about what happened.

At present, radiation levels remain within normal limits. But what has exceeded all limits is Russia’s already sky-high audacity.

Ukrainian rescuers extinguished the fire that broke out after the strike. The world now needs to take real new steps so that Russia feels that its terrorist war is ultimately a blow against itself.

⚡️ Last night, Russia also attacked civilian facilities in 13 regions of Ukraine. Over the past week alone, Russia launched 88 missiles, more than 3,250 attack drones, and about 1,800 guided aerial bombs against our country.

We must increase pressure on Russia. Thank you to everyone who is helping,” Zelenskyy said.

🗣 Russia maintains both open and closed channels of communication with Ukraine, Ushakov says

“We have both open and closed contacts with Ukraine. Open contacts existed when we held several rounds of negotiations,” said Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian leader.

He also confirmed the Russian leader’s statement that “a fairly prominent Russian businessman, known to many,” visited Kyiv in May and met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Ushakov declined to identify the businessman.

⚡️ President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in the United Kingdom for talks with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

In addition, he will meet with King Charles III tomorrow.

🔥 Ukrainian military strikes the Semykolodezyanske oil depot and an oil terminal in temporarily occupied Crimea

Ukrainian forces struck the Semykolodezyanske oil depot and a maritime oil terminal in temporarily occupied Crimea.

According to the military, the occupiers use the oil depot to store and transport fuel oil, diesel fuel, and bitumen, while the oil terminal in Feodosia serves as a backup fuel supply facility.

❗️“We will not die quietly. We will respond to these attacks,” President Zelenskyy said, declaring that Ukraine will bring the war back to Russian territory.

President Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron have arrived at the residence of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for talks.

According to Sky News, a new military aid package for Ukraine may be announced following the meeting of the E3 leaders.

Zelenskyy’s visit to London also comes amid what analysts describe as an improving situation for Ukraine on parts of the front line. The Institute for the Study of War has reported that Ukrainian forces have regained some territory in recent months.

Sky News writes that the meeting is intended to signal to both the Kremlin and Washington that Europe intends to play a key role in ending the war.

“We met in the important E3+Ukraine format and discussed our defense in detail. We briefed our partners on the situation on the battlefield and Russian losses,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

“For five consecutive months, the aggressor has lost more than 30,000 soldiers killed and wounded.

It is important that our assessments align with those of our partners: Russia is not winning on the battlefield, and our medium-range and deep strikes are significantly limiting its ability to expand aggression.

At the same time, protection against ballistic threats, which Russia uses to terrorize our cities and communities, remains critically important.

We also discussed ways to intensify diplomatic efforts and Europe’s role in this process.

It has always been a priority for Ukraine that Europe’s position and voice in negotiations remain strong.

I thank Britain, France, and Germany for their support and willingness to help. We agreed that our teams would work on the next steps.”

⚡️National Police Prevented an Attempted Assassination of a Defence Intelligence of Ukraine (HUR) official and detained an agent of Russian special services.

According to the investigation, a 38-year-old Kyiv resident was recruited to assassinate the head of an intelligence unit in exchange for $100,000, of which he received $10,000 in advance.

The suspect studied the target’s routes and daily routine, planned to carry out the attack using an FPV drone, and searched for an accomplice with the necessary skills.

He has been charged with preparing a premeditated murder for financial gain. The offense carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison or life imprisonment.

❗️Five people killed, 14 injured in Zaporizhzhia region as a result of Russian attacks — National Police

Russian forces carried out 949 strikes across the region over the past day.

Two people were killed in a UAV attack on the village of Balabyne — a 58-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman. Six others, including a 17-year-old boy, were injured.

In Zaporizhzhia district, a UAV attack killed three people — two women aged 72 and 76, and a 76-year-old man. Eight others were injured, including four men and four women aged between 47 and 69.

⚡️ Oil prices rose by more than $3 per barrel following new strikes in Lebanon and Iran, Reuters reported.

Brent crude futures climbed $3.20, or 3.39%, to $96.24 per barrel, while U.S. WTI crude futures rose $2.87, or 3.17%, to $93.41 per barrel.

The increase fully offset Friday’s losses, when prices fell amid expectations of a de-escalation of tensions between the United States and Iran, according to the report.

Amid concerns over supply disruptions, OPEC+ countries agreed on Sunday to increase oil production for the fourth time in the past four months. However, analysts said the impact of the decision is likely to be limited, as many OPEC+ members are unable to meet their production targets due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and, in Russia’s case, infrastructure strikes that have reduced production capacity.

😡 Russians launched a drone strike on a residential area of Zaporizhzhia — Fedorov

The head of the Regional Military Administration reported that two people were killed and 15 others were injured as a result of the attack.

🇪🇺 The EU has authorized its naval mission to detain and inspect vessels belonging to Russia’s shadow fleet, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said.

According to Kallas, the goal is not only to enforce sanctions against Russia, but also to strengthen maritime security and reduce the revenues the Kremlin uses to finance its war against Ukraine.

Launched in March 2020 and based in Rome, Operation IRINI was originally created to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya. The mission also monitors illegal oil exports and helps combat human trafficking.

The decision to expand IRINI’s powers comes amid growing pressure on Russia’s shadow fleet — a network of aging tankers and cargo vessels used to circumvent Western restrictions on oil exports. European countries have increasingly taken action against such ships.

Kyiv Post:

⚡️ Armenian Prime MinisterPashinyan dismissed recent threats from Belarusian leader Lukashenko regarding a potential “Ukrainian scenario” for Armenia, calling them “not serious”.

He rejected calls for an immediate referendum on choosing between the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) and the European Union, noting that Armenia has not yet officially applied for EU candidate status.

⚡️ President Zelensky and the leaders of Britain, France and Germany agreed on five conditions for a lasting peace with Russia, including an immediate ceasefire, security guarantees for Ukraine, keeping Russian assets frozen, and safeguarding European security interests in any future settlement.

⚡️ Drones struck Russia’s Krasnodar region overnight, with a fire breaking out at the Grushovaya tank farm near Novorossiysk.

The facility is part of the Sheskharis oil transshipment complex — one of Russia’s key Black Sea oil export hubs and a frequent target of Ukrainian long-range strikes.

⚡️ Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Vladimir Putin that Ukraine is “very close” to developing a ballistic missile capable of striking targets inside Russia, according to The Telegraph.

⚡️ Zelensky said he would be willing to freeze the current front lines as part of a ceasefire, calling it “the quickest way” to stop the fighting.

Speaking to Sky News, the Ukrainian president stressed that any freeze must be part of a broader diplomatic process to ensure the war does not return.

⚡️ Putin called Zelensky’s letter “rude.” Zelensky says they should have seen the first draft.

During an interview with Sky News, the Ukrainian president joked about criticism of his recent letter to Putin. When asked about references to Putin’s age and years in power, Zelensky replied: “You didn’t read the first version.”

Asked if the original draft was even ruder, Zelensky laughed and declined to share it.

⚡️ “I told Trump I didn’t play with Putin. For us, this is very serious. It’s not about cards.”

In an interview with Sky News, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine’s greatest strength was never a hand of cards, but its people.

“I didn’t have cards, but I had the most important thing — smart and brave people. This is our card — the card of Ukraine,” Zelensky said, adding that Ukraine’s drone capabilities were built on that strength.

⚡️ A Russian strike hit a Nova Poshta sorting hub in Kharkiv, causing major damage and triggering a fire that spread across roughly 1,000 square meters.

The facility was partially destroyed in the attack, raising concerns that thousands of parcels may never reach their destinations.

⚡️ NATO aircraft have reportedly shot down a drone in Latvian airspace for the first time, LRT reported.

According to Lithuanian Armed Forces, the drone entered Latvia after being affected by Russian electronic warfare systems. The aircraft was brought down by French fighter jets operating under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission.

⚡️ Drone debris was found near a village in Moldova after an unmanned aircraft crossed into the country’s airspace during a major Russian missile and drone assault on Ukraine.

⚡️ The dispute between Poland and Ukraine over the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) during World War II has become a conflict over memory, dignity, and the future of Polish-Ukrainian relations. Both sides have expectations. Poland expects recognition that a planned ethnic cleansing campaign against Poles took place. Ukraine expects understanding that the cult of the UPA is primarily anti-Russian in character and is not intended to justify murder.

⚡️ For the first time ever, NATO fighter jets have shot down a drone in Latvian airspace.

Latvian authorities said the aircraft entered the country due to Russian electronic warfare activity, triggering air alerts across eastern Latvia before being intercepted by NATO aircraft.

⚡️ Ukraine has received a €2.8 billion payment from the EU under the Ukraine Facility program, marking the seventh tranche of budget support from the bloc.

The European Commission said the funds were released after Ukraine implemented reforms in key sectors, including public finance, the judiciary, energy, agriculture, and digitalization.

⚡️ The EU has empowered its Operation IRINI naval mission to stop and inspect ships suspected of belonging to Russia’s “shadow fleet,” expanding efforts to enforce sanctions and curb Moscow’s oil revenues.

The move follows a series of vessel seizures by European countries targeting sanctions evasion.

⚡️ Zelensky congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan on his election victory and described the result as a win for Armenia’s sovereignty and independence.

Zelensky also called on the European Union to increase support for Armenia, saying closer ties with Europe should bring tangible benefits to citizens.

⚡️ Two people were killed and 15 injured after a Russian drone struck a busy bus stop in Zaporizhzhia during rush hour.

The attack hit a crowded civilian area, leaving emergency crews scrambling to treat the wounded and clear the scene.

⚡️ Ukraine is scaling up a new generation of interceptor drones capable of autonomously targeting and destroying Russian Shahed attack drones.

Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said the technology, developed with support from the Brave1 defense innovation platform, has already passed combat testing in the Kharkiv region and automates nearly the entire interception process.

This will be poetic justice.

This could be a good match

FT article on "The Gulf states and Ukraine need each other".

Countries in Iran’s line of fire need to shore up their drone defences, and Kyiv is in desperate need of funding.

Ukraine is currently overstretched and cannot send too many counter-drone operators abroad without the risk of endangering the home front. They need funding from the Gulf states. With it, Ukraine can scale and balance between security needs at home and export opportunities abroad.

The Gulf could replace dwindling US assistance and create a regional fund for Ukraine focused specifically on sustainable counter-drone solutions and innovation. Combining Ukrainian knowhow with US technology and Gulf Arab capital would put a serious dent in Iran’s strategy of attrition.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Russian military command is reportedly withdrawing forces from the Kinburn Spit in Mykolaiv Oblast as Ukraine’s intermediate-range strike campaign against Russian supply lines in occupied Ukraine is rendering defenses in the area increasingly untenable.
  2. The Kremlin continues to reject peace negotiations with Ukraine despite recent repeated Ukrainian offers for direct negotiations.
  3. NATO forces downed a drone over Latvia for the first time on June 8 after Russian electronic warfare (EW) systems diverted it into Latvian airspace.
  4. Russian forces launched 155 drones against Ukraine overnight.

⚡️ Volodymyr Zelensky has warned Vladimir Putin that Ukraine is “very close” to developing a ballistic missile capable of striking targets inside Russia, according to The Telegraph.

This will be poetic justice.

It would. There may be a bit of bluster here, though. Ballistic missiles are very hard to perfect because of their complexity and the immense physical forces involved in their launch. They don't become reliable until they've gone through an iterative process of launching them, having them fail, and fixing that particular fault.

This can be mitigated by using an existing design, which Ukraine has done in the past. Their Neptune antiship missile is based on an old Soviet era Russian missile design, for example.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 09/06/2026 10:44

so this refinement process is what's going on with the Russian Oreshnik missile I suppose? There have been varying degrees of glee at some failures of the missile, but it sounds like it's part of the whole process then, and not that it's a fundamentally flawed missile.

ReleaseTheDucksOfWar · 09/06/2026 10:47

Interesting that the Russians are withdrawing from the Kinburn Spit in some areas due to the intermedium interdiction campaign. Ukraine regained some of the Spit about ... three? ... years ago but were unable to take the rest.

The war in Ukraine has fueled North Korea’s “economic miracle,” according to The Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper reports that North Korea’s economy is experiencing its strongest period in years thanks to arms sales to Russia, the deployment of troops to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, backing from China, and the circumvention of international sanctions.
According to the report, Pyongyang has seen the emergence of Uber-like taxi services, QR code mobile payments, Chinese electric vehicles, pizza restaurants, and even BMW dealerships in recent years.
Last year alone, about 10,000 new apartments were built in the capital — more than in Los Angeles or Chicago during the same period.
At the same time, a significant share of Kim Jong-un’s regime’s income comes from cooperation with Moscow. Analysts estimate that arms sales have already brought North Korea billions of dollars.
Just a few years ago, Kim’s regime was widely viewed as being in serious trouble. Now, The Wall Street Journal writes, North Korea has become one of the main economic beneficiaries of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Ukrainian FPV interceptors can now independently shoot down Shahed drones, Ukraine’s Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov said.
The new AI-based technology automates 95% of the interception process — from launch to target destruction. The operator only needs to select a target on the radar and authorize the strike. After that, the system independently guides the interceptor and destroys the UAV.
The technology has already successfully passed combat testing in Kharkiv region.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy provided details of his conversation with U.S. President’s representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Russia may have to sacrifice oil exports because of fuel shortages, Reuters reports.
According to the agency, Russia could reduce oil shipments through its western ports by nearly a third in June, from 2.5 million to 1.7 million barrels per day.
The reason is straightforward: some of the oil normally exported will have to be processed domestically. Following attacks on refineries, fuel production has been disrupted, and some regions have already reported shortages.
Against this backdrop, Russia is seeking to increase gasoline and diesel production to avoid supply disruptions during the peak summer season.

Oil prices rose by more than $3 per barrel following new strikes in Lebanon and Iran, Reuters reported.

Zelensky says Putin used Abramovich to deliver a message outlining a possible framework for future peace talks.
The Ukrainian president told The Guardian that the Russian-Israeli billionaire arrived in Kyiv carrying the proposal, but stressed that Ukraine will not surrender territory as part of any deal.

Ukraine has received a €2.8 billion payment from the EU under the Ukraine Facility program, marking the seventh tranche of budget support from the bloc.
The European Commission said the funds were released after Ukraine implemented reforms in key sectors, including public finance, the judiciary, energy, agriculture, and digitalization.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Estonia for the Ukraine-NB8 summit.
He has already held talks with the prime ministers of Finland, Latvia, and Sweden, and is set to meet Estonian President Alar Karis later today.

“We can say that they are losing the initiative,” Zelensky told The Guardian. “Each day, day by day, they’re losing this.”

30 Ukrainian companies have been cleared to create private air defense units that will operate under the Air Force to protect key industrial and infrastructure sites from Russian drone and missile strikes.
The experimental project was launched in late 2025, with several units already being on combat duty while adding an extra layer of protection to Ukraine’s air defense around high-risk targets.

Zelensky said he held a “very substantive” conversation with French President Macron, revisiting their earlier talks in London and coordinating next steps.

The dispute between Poland and Ukraine over the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) during World War II has become a conflict over memory, dignity, and the future of Polish-Ukrainian relations. Both sides have expectations. Poland expects recognition that a planned ethnic cleansing campaign against Poles took place. Ukraine expects understanding that the cult of the UPA is primarily anti-Russian in character and is not intended to justify murder.

The Russians dropped three aerial bombs on Sloviansk. Seven people were wounded; homes, a medical facility, and an administrative building were damaged.
Also during the day, Russian forces shelled Kherson with drones and artillery — three adults and a 14-year-old boy were injured.

The Russians also struck Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk region — a man was killed, and four people were injured.

In St. Petersburg, the "Arsenal" plant, which operates for the needs of the Russian military-industrial complex, exploded
The blast wave broke through a brick wall of the building. A hangar with chemical reagents is on fire.
"Arsenal" is under EU and US sanctions. The plant is involved in the production of naval artillery systems (AK-100, AK-130, and others), launchers for military ships, individual components for missile technology, as well as the production of spacecraft and equipment for them.

Volodymyr Zelensky proposes using Roman Abramovich's money from the sale of Chelsea for Ukrainian air defense. He stated this in an interview with The Guardian.
The amount in question is £2.4 billion ($3.3 billion) — Zelensky discussed its fate with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Zelensky believes the funds could be used to purchase missile defense systems from the United States.
Zelensky also mentioned a conversation with Abramovich during a meeting in Kyiv and joked: "He didn't bring the money. I said, 'We need your money.'"
▪️Abramovich — the former owner of Chelsea, holding Israeli and Portuguese citizenship — came under sanctions in 2022 and was forced to sell the club. The money has been "stuck" ever since: the oligarch wanted to transfer it to a charitable foundation for victims from both countries, while Britain insisted on aid exclusively for Ukraine.

so this refinement process is what's going on with the Russian Oreshnik missile I suppose? There have been varying degrees of glee at some failures of the missile, but it sounds like it's part of the whole process then, and not that it's a fundamentally flawed missile.

Correct. The glee is misplaced. The process is called testing to failure, and all missiles go through it. The newer the design, the more design flaws there are to discover and fix. SpaceX has had many launch failures, but that's because its designs are groundbreaking. By making the boost sections capable of returning to Earth under controlled conditions so they can be recovered and reused, SpaceX dramatically lowers the cost of each rocket.

After its third failed mission - what next for SpaceX?

There were many early launch failures with SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket, but it's now highly reliable and used regularly. That's the vehicle that has put thousands of StarLink satellites and many U.S. military payloads into orbit.

By the way, the Ukrainian Neptune missile is a cruise missile, not a ballistic missile, but the same principle applies.

Bulgaria’s new government plans to halt arms supplies to Ukraine and is calling for a “mutually acceptable” peace, Bloomberg reports.
“Ukraine needs more people, not more weapons,” Bulgarian Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said, calling for “a just peace determined by both sides of the conflict.”
Stoyanov’s position echoes that of Prime Minister Rumen Radev, who has previously described sanctions against Russia as harmful to the European economy and argued that “the war in Ukraine has no military solution.”
Bulgaria is one of Europe’s largest producers of Soviet-caliber ammunition, which played a crucial role in supporting Ukraine at the start of the full-scale invasion.
Although Sofia has not provided direct military assistance, Bulgarian-made ammunition has reached Ukraine through exports to other EU countries.
Since 2022, Bulgaria has sent 13 military aid packages to Ukraine, although their contents and value have not been disclosed for security reasons.
In September 2025, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that Bulgaria had supplied roughly one-third of the weapons provided to Ukraine.

Ukrainian drones have reduced Russian cargo traffic to Crimea by 71%, said Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces Robert "Madyar" Brovdi.
Since June 7, traffic has been effectively restricted on the key highway E58 (the Russians call this route "R-280 Novorossiya"): Mariupol — Berdyansk — Melitopol — Simferopol. This is the main land supply route for Russian troops in the south.
Traffic dynamics:
🔴Total flow: ~11,000 → 6,500 vehicles per day (-41%);
🔴Cargo flow: ~3,800 → 1,100 vehicles per day (-71%).
The Unmanned Systems Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine clarified: there is no complete blockade, but logistics for the Russians have deteriorated, so they are rerouting their supply lines.

🇪🇺European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has presented the 21st sanctions package against Russia.
Among the proposals — a ban on entry into the EU for all Russians who have fought against Ukraine.
The EU also proposes adding another 30 vessels from Russia's shadow fleet to the sanctions list. For the first time, the list will include ships that assist the shadow fleet.
Other proposals include:
🔴restrictions on the sale of tankers for liquefied natural gas transportation;
🔴a full ban on transactions for another 31 Russian banks, as well as 20 additional banks, crypto firms or platforms, and oil traders in third countries that help Russia;
🔴new export restrictions on alloys and metals to Russia;
🔴a ban on importing metals, metal ores, or auto parts from Russia;
🔴restrictions on importing fish products from Russia.
As for the price cap on Russian oil, due to the war in the Middle East and the resulting energy crisis, the EU wants to suspend adjustments to the cap until January of next year. According to von der Leyen, this will give oil markets time to stabilize while maintaining pressure on Russia's revenues.
The European Commission President did not name any Russians who might be subject to European sanctions. Media have reported that the EU is discussing the possibility of adding the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, to the sanctions list — a decision previously blocked by Hungary.
The package still needs to be approved by EU member states.

This was stated by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, commenting on the recent meeting of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky with the leaders of the E3 format in London — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Tusk said he had discussed the outcome of the meeting with Merz and emphasized that Poland is an "absolutely necessary link" in talks about Ukraine's future, yet it was not present at the meeting.
Tusk also spoke with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni — she said she was also "not enthusiastic" about the E3 format. In response, Tusk announced a meeting on Ukraine in the coming days in a "quintet" format — representatives of Poland and Italy will join the leaders of Britain, France, and Germany.

❗️The Russians have begun actively recruiting underage girls via Telegram to murder Ukrainian military personnel, said National Police Chief Ivan Vyhovskyi.
According to him, since the beginning of 2026, law enforcement has already recorded six such contract killings organized through messengers. One of these crimes was prevented.
The scheme works as follows: Russian handlers find girls on Telegram and other messengers, promise easy money, and remotely control all their actions. They are tasked with seeking out military personnel through dating sites and inviting them on dates.
The handlers pay for apartment rentals, alcohol, and other expenses. Additionally, the girls are directed to "stash spots" where they receive methadone.
