How to cope with a neighbour’s loud music until we move

I’ve lived in a semi for ten years next to neighbours who on paper are lovely and will do anything for you , but their teen son has driven me crazy for the last five years playing full blast music whenever his parents are out. The walls are paper thin so my poor daughter who is currently sitting her GCSE’s is driven to distraction trying to revise.
hes 19 now and doesn’t work do the second he gets up the sound system goes on.. full volume , drum and bass .. and doesn’t stop until his parents get home around six, then as soon as they go out , maybe to visit friends, it’s goes on.
we’ve asked do many times over the years for it to be turned down, the parents don’t see a problem and he promises to turn it down when I ask him then a few days later it’s back on full volume .
we’ve bought another house and are moving in August, the whole situation has literally made me ill , I can’t even hear my own tv for the constant thump thump, I’m counting down the months until We go - help me keep my sanity until then, appreciate light hearted revenge ideas 🤣 or just coping strategies

If you don’t sell to the HA then one day in the future you may want to sell on the open market and you will have to declare the dispute you’re thinking of telling environmental health about. Is it worth it?

I would sell onto the HA. There will always be problems with people like your next door neighbours.

Some universities let members of the public access their buildings so your daughter could study in one of those if there’s a university nearby.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 29/04/2026 04:45

Why have not reported it to Environment Health as a Noise Nuisance matter before now. Do your other
Neighbours hear it as well.

Did you declare this noise problem to the new people who are moving into your house?

I wouldn't be very happy if l were them.

rwalker · 29/04/2026 05:43

I’ve just read your not and don’t need to sell
I’d be round EVERY SINGLE DAY
and soon as parents come home do it to them

also tell them you are renting it and will line up tenants who will have no problem making noise , dogs that bark constantly and make there life a misery
you have nothing to lose and the upper hand with the threat

Because I’ve had cancer and been having chemo , I was otherwise preoccupied for the last couple of years and am also terrified of nasty reprisals , I did not particularly enjoy the prospect of potentially having to go to court . A letter would do nothing , they think there is no issue and that I’m the problem.
no one else is moving in .. RTT, I’m in conversations to sell to the HA

@rwalker Theyd probably love tenants like that, people just lie them 😬 I genuinely don’t think they have a problem with noise, they don’t care 🙈
DD is up and I’ve told her to put her music on loud so it wakes him up..

Oh god I feel for you, I had something similar and took months to not be triggered to fury and heart palpitations when I heard bass and loud neighbourly noises. You just reach your limit, and the selfishness is hard to believe isn't it!

If I were you I'd talk to your neighbours again and explain you're moving BECAUSE of this, that your daughter has exams and it's affecting you all so much. Their son is an adult but let's face it, it's still their house and he's theirs to sort out, they should be getting rid of his sound system at least. I feel for you as there's no point in going down official routes now and risking a dispute, but I also feel for the new buyers. I hope they can get him to stop.

UhOhRatPoo · 29/04/2026 08:26

Our council will send out noise abatement officers to a disturbance, they have a phone line. I did it once when our neighbours were blasting party music at 2am. They went round and knocked the door and made them turn it off. We’re in a London borough.

Seymour5 · 29/04/2026 08:50

Ex housing worker here, the neighbours as HA tenants are surely in breach of their tenancy agreement? The HA would have been my first contact after a few episodes. I feel for you @Rockschooldropout we had similar issues with the teenage son next door for several years, His (single) mum tried, but she had to work, and he was horrible to her as well. Not sorry when they left, all peaceful ever since.

Rockschooldropout · 30/04/2026 00:38

@Imisscoffee2021 I’m exactly that , literally tensed waiting for the music then my chest goes tight . My heart races , I’ve tried speaking to the parents , I went round yesterday , they think I’m the fun police, they don’t mind his music and don’t think it’s that loud 😕 I think if I said I was moving because of it they’d laugh at me. I’m not selling it on to new buyers, I’m selling back to the HA

@Seymour5 I had mentioned it to the HA but she thinks they are a wonderful family , tbh this particular HA seem to have a 100 per cent tolerance for noise, drugs etc .She said if I had a problem it was out of their jurisdiction and to contact the council

@UhOhRatPoo not round here I’m afraid , we live in very rural England , 101 won’t attend and council don’t have 24 hour noise lines .. think Sandford in Hot Fuzz.. That kind of sleepy but without all the murders

How on earth are you going to keep renters in there OP? They’ll all move when they realise what he’s like.

If your tenants aren’t as placid as you, I would worry about future conflicts between your tenants and next door. There could be real problems.

I think you think your problems will go away when you move, they’ll get worse! The tenants will never be off the phone!

I would get rid of the house asap.

I’ve already said further up thread that I’m in talks to sell the house back to the HA 😌

I would go it one evening leaving music on against the wall something with a real thump to it and playing as loud as you can

then when they complain say welcome to my world. When you son stops we will stop

BobbySheenSomethingNewToDoNsoul · 03/05/2026 00:53

It's mad that the parents allow 19yr old little bastard make someone's life so miserable

Okiedokie123 · 03/05/2026 01:10

I would relentlessly bang on their door when his music is on. And when his parents are in to let them know about when they were out. And I’d invite them in to spend some time in your house when his music is on so they can experience what it’s like.

Be annoyingly persistent.

Shitstix · 03/05/2026 01:23

We had this except our neigbour was a 60 yo male, who played his drum and bass 7 days a week for up to 11 hours a day, all because he took a dislike to us.

The council eventually took him to court and we now have peace and quiet.

I'll never forgive that prick for making our lives miserable for 18 months, but I take some pleasure in knowing he was arrested and bailed because of this and he was fined and ordered to pay court costs.

Hold on to the move date, you have an end in sight. When we were going through this I desperately wanted to sell (we'd only been here a year) but who would buy a house with that noise.

MarshaMarshaMarsha · 03/05/2026 09:06

I would sell it to the HA. I couldn’t live with myself if I rented it out to someone knowing about the noise issues and the likelihood of “tyre slashing” if the tenants complained!! You say you would tell prospective tenants but would you be fully honest, I doubt it!!!
