Work experience as an Actuary

My daughter is in 1st year doing a maths degree and is keen on becoming an actuary. I’m not sure how AI proof it is as a career but she wants to explore this further. She is looking to apply for internships but is keen to get some work experience/shadowing this summer. She had a look at trying to contact some firms but they seem to direct straight to their internship applications. Any help with how to get work experience? Companies that may be worth contacting? DH and I are medical so next to useless with knowing how the industry works. We’re based in the Midlands.

If you or she are near London, may be worth getting in touch with the Worshipful Company of Actuaries and seeing if they have a mentoring scheme or similar. I'm not an actuary myself but have been to some of their events and they are a really friendly bunch.

And if she's in - ooh, I don't know - the Midlands...?

Look for some insurance companies near you and write to them.

Or contact Institute of Actuaries

Very lucrative career but London-centric.

I would encourage her to pursue it because we can't stop living due to AI threat. Maths is never going to be something that isn't valued, for a variety of reasons, which go above and beyond the ability to work out an equation.

Companies, especially in insurance, aren't reknown for answering emails or phone calls for generic enquiries. Might be better to see if there are some networking events in the area with finance professionals.

Thank you so much for the advice.

Just making the point that the Company is based in London so this might not be the best option if the OP and her daughter are in Scotland or the NE or somewhere.

You keep saying "if"...

Luckily we’re very commutable to London so not too much of a barrier.
