Do you think I’d manage to take these flowers four hours on a train?

Sainsbury’s are selling the most amazing flowers -butterfly ranuncullus- and I’d like to bring some to my DSis. I’m visiting her by train on Friday. It’s four hours away. Fortunately I don’t have to change trains. How would I wrap or prepare these for travel? Her nearest Sainsbury’s is 30 miles away.

id just shove them in a carrier bag and try not to squash them 🤷‍♀️

Put in a cardboard box, close the lid

You should wing it

bilbodog · 25/04/2026 18:49

I would wrap the ends in wet kitchen roll and then in a plastic carrier bag and hope for the best!

These dont last well out of water. I wouldn't risk it - if you can give them a water source, you'd be fine.

Mum5net · 25/04/2026 18:59

ooh a cardboard box! It might be my preferred route because I can’t see the carrier bag being rigid enough. Might need to experiment before Friday . If in a carrier would you carry flowers pointing down or up for safety?

I just wouldn't, if the train's a nightmare it'll be a faff.

But if you really want to, a cardboard box either in a bag or with a string handle.

How would I manage a water reservoir in the box without ending up like papier-mâché? 🤦‍♀️

Well yes.
Just pretend you never saw the flowers and save yourself the hassle!

A plastic glass in the bottom of a wine carrier bag?

Wet kitchen roll, with cling film around if needed

This is what I would do

Actually might need to experiment this

I cant even be sure the Sainsbury’s near Highbury & Islington tube station will have them.

I'd go for wet paper towels in a sandwich bag, elastic banded rounded the bottom of the bunch. And then put them top up in a big study plastic bag.

jay55 · 25/04/2026 19:30

Sandwich bag with ice cubes in sellotaped shut.

shellyleppard · 25/04/2026 19:32

@Mum5net could you put them in a plastic sandwich bag and close as much as possible ? Or as previous posts have said wrap the stems in damp kitchen roll

Mum5net · 25/04/2026 21:02

Just been chatting DSis about my trip. She wants to drive to the town where nearest Sainsbury’s is for something else and thinks it ideal if I come with her . Result!

Thank you to everyone- it was going to be the sealed sandwich bag, the kitchen roll, the other carrier bag inside the folding 📦 box. But now I don’t need to …

Soak a cloth or lots of kitchen towel in water and wrap around the base ofvthe flowers. Place the bottom of the flowers and wet cloth in a freezer bag and place an elastic band around the bag to stop it falling off.
