What would you spend this on?

I'm due a small windfall at some point in the near future - not a life changing amount but enough to pay off the remainder of my debt, and maybe replace some furniture or go on a wee UK break.

It's not often I have spare money, and I'd like to spend some on something frivolous (but not wasteful) for myself. Nothing extravagant, and I'd prefer to buy something I can enjoy for a while rather than a one off experience.

Anything nice you've bought yourself recently? I think I'd like it to be relatively useful but more on the fun side of practical.

We were on holiday recently and I bought myself some beautiful earrings.
they were around £200, ten times what I normally spend.
it feels really special.

PGmicstand · 24/04/2026 23:39

Not at all useful but to be enjoyed. If I had a windfall right now I'd buy a piece of art.
I saw a painting at a small independent gallery a few months ago and would have loved to buy it.

REDB99 · 24/04/2026 23:41

Is there a painting or something for the house you would like? In the past I have bought pictures, ornaments, handbags and jewellery when I’ve had some spare cash for a treat. I’m currently thinking of getting a new dinner service (not exciting but will last and make me happy when I finally get round to replacing the old lot).

justjuggling · 25/04/2026 03:05

I’d buy a beautiful sculpture for the garden.

ThisChirpyOpalCat · 25/04/2026 03:08

A gardener to help sort out our garden, suggest plant suitable for the area.

Pistachiomonster · 25/04/2026 03:16

Maybe a nice lamp, piece of art work, luxury heated throw for the house.

Or maybe a piece of nice timeless jewellery, a bag, some expensive and very comfortable shoes, a lovely dressing gown (one hundred stars have some lovely colourful ones, if they are your taste and you like colour and patterns).

Le creuset/staub
A cleaner to help me get on top of things
A boob job

I’d buy a large piece of play equipment to have in the garden for my grandchildren. If you want something “lasting”, perhaps a sundial or a picture.

DoomCup · 25/04/2026 13:31

I don't have a garden unfortunately - otherwise garden furniture would definitely be on the wish list!

I like the idea of a picture, I rent so can't change the decor much - so anything that makes the place feel more like mine is always nice.

Following a thread on here, I'd really like some suffragette earrings. Amethyst, peridot and pearl.

Depending how vain you are, and I am, you could think about having your colours done and/or a really good make-up lesson.

Growlybear83 · 25/04/2026 13:44

I would spend it on jewellery, a lovely painting, or handbags.

ToadRage · 25/04/2026 13:53

When I got a larger than expected inheritance from my Grandmother i first paid a chunk of my mortgage and spent £3500 on Invisalign. Have wanted it for a while after my teeth started moving back after the brace in my teens. I also bought a £4000 cruise for my husband and I. It's good to buy something you really want but couldn't normally afford when you get extra money.

Ooh I really like this idea.

I collect a bit of amber jewellery so I might have a look and see if there is anything really special- normally I receive it as a gift so never ask for anything too extravagant!

If I were in debt and relying on an inheritance to pay it off, I’d keep the money in the bank.

WildGarden · 25/04/2026 14:26

How about buying some premium bonds. Then every month you stand the chance of winning a million (or at least getting a little windfall that you can spend on yourself).

TheeNotoriousPIG · 25/04/2026 14:28

I would prioritise paying off all debts first, and make sure that I had enough to feel "comfortable", so that I wouldn't worry about how much I spent food shopping or whatever.

After that, I would probably put it towards buying something for one of my hobbies, because that way, I'd get plenty of use out of it (e.g. I like cooking, growing my own food and knitting). Alternatively, I might invest it in a course or membership so that I could learn to do something that I am interested in, e.g. beekeeping.

TheDogsMother · 25/04/2026 15:32

I’d buy a Jack Russell but you may not be up for that level of chaos in your life 🤣

devonsevon11 · 25/04/2026 15:53

I’d get myself a massage and a much needed cut and colour, or for something practical I would love an air fryer, or maybe one of those hot chocolate machines, I’ve always fancied one but couldn’t justify the cost normally as seems like an indulgence.

A bit boring but I would also love a cordless hoover, mine is very large and cumbersome. Or a new hairdryer would be good.

Oh, or a nice dressing table. I would love a dressing table. Or possibly a new (bigger) wardrobe

Tel12 · 25/04/2026 15:56

I'd be inclined to save it.

Thanks, but doesn't answer my question.

Another one for a piece of art.

We went for a day out last week and my OH spotted a small sculpture in a garden that we both thought was lovely.
He did some investigation, found out who created it and we have been speaking to the artist. We are just settling on the final design and will be placing the order next week.
It is meant for outdoors but it is so pretty that we will be keeping it in the living room.

Bjorkdidit · Yesterday 08:31

I'd save it until I saw something I wanted and buy that. I wouldn't deliberately look for something to buy just because I had some spare money. Doing that means it's more likely that you feel you 'never have money to buy the things you want' because you tend to 'panic spend' on something you don't truly want.
