Northumberland coast tips for someone with limited mobility please

Hi all. I'm taking my sister on holiday with me to Northumberland in June, we have a cottage near the coast booked. She has limited mobility but does not like using a wheelchair unless absolutely necessary. She uses a walking stick or crutches. She can only walk short distances or stand for short periods. But I would love for her to be able to enjoy the coast.
So I am after limited-mobility friendly places to go - beaches that have car parks next to them, places with nice views where we can sit in camping chairs with a thermos of tea and binoculars, benches in scenic places etc.
Any suggestions are very welcome, thanks.
Also any tips for Lindisfarne island bearing in mind the above.

She does not have a blue badge unfortunately

I live in Northumberland and have very similar issues to your sister (IE limited mobility and no blue badge). We go to places like Newbiggin by the Sea (large carpark at the Point, and a nice walk along the promenade: good café near the bandstand - Bertorellis). Blyth South Beach has a good carpark, and again nice walk along the front. Beautiful ice cream from the Coastline fish and chips cafe. Seaton Sluice carpark by the dunes, if she can manage them. Lots of benches where the river runs into the sea.

Druridge Bay has car parking near the beaches, but I can't remember any benches. Alnmouth - again car parking near the beach, but not sure about seating.

We sometimes go to Cragside and do the carriageway drive: plenty of car parks and usually somewhere to sit, but you need to be careful.

Whereabouts are you actually staying? I might be able to come up with other suggestions.

Just thought, last time I went to Alnwick Gardens even though I don't have a blue badge they still let me park in the disabled access car park. There is lots of seating in the gardens.

As I said, neither do I - these are things which work for me.

Try and get yourself up North Northumberland as well as south.

Beadnel, park in carpark and wander onto the beach then to the landing for a drink. Berwick, part at Spittal and then you can easily get onto the beach.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 24/04/2026 12:50

Blyth is rough, as is South Amble. So avoid everywhere apart from the Marina in the North.

Jshkag · 24/04/2026 12:52

Thank you for the suggestions so far, great info
We are staying near Amble so info on north Northumberland is also very welcome

We really want to go to Lindisfarne but just not sure about the practicalities - parking etc

Alnwick castle has an accessible route through. The gardens and cafe in the gardens are wheelchair accessible.

i personally swim at Tynemouth beach which is a fair way south in Newcastle. There’s disabled parking bang next to the beach and a good cafe/restaurant on the beach. At low tide it can be a bit of a walk out to the water. It’s lifeguarded in the summer.

Octavia64 · 24/04/2026 12:58

Lindisfarne is fine.you need to watch the tide on the road but that applies to everyone.

The ruined priory/abbey has an accessible visitors centre but she’ll need to use sticks or crutches to go into the ruins.

lindisfarne castle isn’t wheelchair accessible but can be done with sticks. There’s a nice garden below it. Great views.

Lindisfarne has parking a short walk from the village centre. The castle is further away and up a steep hill so she would struggle to get there, otherwise everything is close together.

Alnwick castle and gardens are both wheelchair accessible if she would consider that, trickier for walking as the ground is uneven. Beadnell has car park, toilets and eating options right by the beach which is beautiful.

Blyth is rough, as is South Amble. So avoid everywhere apart from the Marina in the North.

Amble is very much up and coming.

Druridge Bay has sand dunes you need to negotiate so I'm not sure it is a good idea.

NUFC69 · 24/04/2026 14:30

Actually I've just thought, you can hire a mobility scooter at Alnwick Gardens if she would consider that. You just need to book it before hand.

Jshkag · 24/04/2026 14:59

Thanks for all the further suggestions.
The idea of hiring a mobility scooter is a good one, I'll look into it for Alnwick gardens, does anyone know if anywhere else has them for hire?

@RampantIvyAs I said, the north fine, the south not.

NUFC69 · 24/04/2026 20:33

I'm sorry, I don't know of anywhere else who hires. For some reason or other I seem to think that the ones at Alnwick Gardens are free - you just have to book one. I could, of course, be completely wrong....

I didn't know there was a north and a south Amble. SIL lives near Amble and we just go to the middle of Amble.

Look up coastal custodian on Facebook
Newbiggin has a rough rep however the prom is lovely and flat and they have beach wheelchairs available. Both the maritime centre cafe and needles eye cafe are fab.
South beach blyth, again, bad rep but prom is lovely and accessible, loads of food places etc.
I also love amble, seems accessible to me but I'm not in a chair so you might know better.
Morpeth is not the best for parking but lovely little town for a mooch around shops and so many cafes
Holy Island is a lot of walking. Watch the tide times and walk through the village from the main car park. I'd say it was cobbly and quite busy but you might strike lucky on a weekday
Beadnell is gorgeous but not a lot there, great access to the beach from the landing car park if looking for a beach day. Cute tiny harbour.
Craster is tiny, people tend to go for a longer walk from there but a nice little harbour and pub and kippers etc

I got a bus onto Lindisfarne one year but my dad was driving so can't say where we parked, it was a tiny bus with a very cheerful driver who chatted about the island etc, and got picked back up.too.

campocaro · 24/04/2026 22:29

Second Newbiggin - I live there and it’s a wonderful town with independent shops and lots of friendly cafes etc and beautiful prom and beach

Mathsbabe · 24/04/2026 22:40

Third for Newbiggin which has one of the best "museums" around about the local fishing and families. There are interviews, photos, texts. We loved it.

We always park in Morrisons, but I'm not sure what the time limit is.
