Summer holidays and flight cancellations

If you're going abroad or planning to in the summer are you worried now that your flight might be cancelled? from what it seems like on the news today we could be in problems fairly soon with running low on jet fuel. Just wondered what people think will happen.

I’m not worried as if my holidays are cancelled then I have to accept that. Annoyed yes, for something we haven’t created and I have some lovely trips booked so I won’t be happy with it. But worrying about something I can’t control no

Octavia64 · 22/04/2026 20:57

Yeah I’m due to be going abroad in June.

am a bit worried about it being cancelled but if it is it is.

nothing I can do about it either way.

pizzaHeart · 22/04/2026 21:00

In a way yes, but I agree with @socks1107 that we have no control over it so worrying is pointless.
p.s I’m not always so restrained and sensible 🙂

I would be disappointed but there are worse things that could happen.

ShakyBake · 22/04/2026 21:04

If I get to the airport and they tell me it's cancelled I'll run down the runway naked, and I'm serious

curious79 · 22/04/2026 21:06

One of the legs of my flight has already been cancelled and changed. And we transit through Doha. Yay. At this stage, I am resigned to whatever fate has in stall for me.

TheHouse · 22/04/2026 21:06

I honestly don’t even care if my hol gets cancelled. Will be gutted for my daughter though and her school trip. Early June so we will see.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 22/04/2026 21:16

Oh I think I was being bit naive and thought it was all scaremongering. Going away next weekend, maybe I should be worried? But I guess I would get a refund and then rebook when it’s all sorted whenever that may be. So, What will be will be. Would be a bit gutted but have dealt with worse

paddleboardingmum · 22/04/2026 22:12

If it's next weekend that's likely to be fine I would think. They're talking about 5-6 weeks so, June?

I suppose the thing is to mentally prepare that it might not be going ahead but hope that it is.

@ShakyBake thanks for the laugh!

I’m not worried about missing out but losing money as the insurance company could pull “act of war” and not pay out is a worry. Particularly are there will be so many affected

If you have flights or a package deal it should be refunded. Hotels booked separately may need to be referred to insurers. Always important to have insurance sorted shortly after booking.

paddleboardingmum · 22/04/2026 22:48

I do feel sorry for the airlines and hotels, especially having all this when they've just been recovering and getting back to normal after the pandemic really. Suppose it depends on how long this war rumbles on.

I can see a lot of people being stung with companies using act of war to not pay out. But who knows. It could
make some companies bankrupt. One things for sure certain. Iran won’t back down nd I can’t see trump doing it either.

Octavia64 · Yesterday 07:56

Yeah I’m expecting to lose the money if it doesn’t go ahead. I’m insured but this is a fairly obvious act of war.

Mosaiccup · Yesterday 07:57

I think if we get to a point where flights are being cancelled because of lack of fuel, cancelled holidays will seem very insignificant.

User478 · Yesterday 08:44

Use the refund money to make your fallout shelter extra bougie.

june7836 · Yesterday 08:52

We are only flying once this year in 2.5 weeks, I’m hoping it’s soon enough to not be affected, it’s long haul and Gemini assures me it’s a critical route that is unlikely to be priority to cut if BA start making cuts so I’m remaining hopeful!

AutumnLover1990 · Yesterday 08:55

I'm worried about our holiday in November to the US. My health issues plus daughter's mocks next year and exams the year after, means this year is the only one I'd let her have 5 days off for...Going to be out first holiday abroad for 18 years so we aren't away all the time.

CmonBobby · Yesterday 09:15

Obviously I’d prefer my holiday not to be cancelled, but if it is it is. My main concern is we need to pay the balance on the villa by end of May. So sort of wondering what to do about that. We can still cancel
before end of June for 50% refund. It’s a very expensive villa so I’m swithering a bit.

I think you are getting mixed up with what holiday and flight companies refund if they cancel and what holiday insurance pays out.

The holiday or flight company refunds if they cancel. Nothing to do with your insurance.

Wolmando · Yesterday 09:28

During Covid we were advised to book package holidays rather than separate flights and hotels because of the refund policies.

We had a package holiday booked with Villa Plus during Covid which luckily got refunded. After that they stopped doing flights and went to villas only, no doubt so they wouldn’t have to pay out in any similar future events.
We haven’t booked anything abroad yet this year and I’m definitely feeling cautious and thinking we’ll wait until nearer the time just in case.

BerryTwister · Yesterday 09:56

I’m trying not to think about it too much, as there is literally nothing I can do.

We’re going to Italy, with flights and villa booked separately. I assume the airline will refund the flights if they’re cancelled, but we’d still be liable for the villa, so I’m thinking we’d just have to drive or get the train. Or fly as near as we can to our destination and drive from there.

But I’ve been telling myself that the very last thing Trump wants is for everyone’s travel plans to be disrupted, because that would affect his popularity. I’d like to think that he’d have the sense to fix this before the summer holidays started. He’ll also be under huge pressure from the airlines, who would be facing monumental losses if they had to refund everyone.

My guess is that airlines will prioritise the summer flights, to maximise their profits, and then look at scaling back flights from autumn.

paddleboardingmum · Yesterday 10:31

I hope so @BerryTwister I wonder if Trump will twig that a lack of flights will also impact the World Cup.

I hope you get to go on your holiday @AutumnLover1990
