Something not right about this 'news' story

70 year old woman claims to be unable to sell her house.

'I reluctantly dropped the price from £860,000 to £750,000 six months ago because I was desperate'

But if you look at the house on Rightmove, it's advertised at 850k. So she's only dropped it by 10k in all this time. Did the paper make the 'typo' on purpose do we think? Surely reducing your asking price by 10k in 18 months, is not news?

She's just asking too much for it.

But the house they advertise isn't knockdown price, it's 850k instead of 860k

If they have the right house.

I see the advantages to the paper but not to the women trying to sell her house. Do you think she's been conned into agreeing to the article?

I think newspapers are very good at conjuring up ragebait stories from absolute non-events, and don't care who gets crushed/trolled/harangued/misunderstood in the process. You see it all the time - photos of people looking miserable, whore coming away with less credibility and more of a dodgy online presence that before they started.

That house is stunning. Never read newspaper articles its all lies.

Stunning? I thought it rather dull....

TheKittenswithMittens · 22/04/2026 14:49

Make a lovely HMO. Loads of off-street parking.

If they have the right house.

It’s not the right house - the one linked to in the article hasn’t been reduced.

Thought we’d established that right house is the chalet bungalow that needs work?

HawkersWest · 22/04/2026 14:50

purpleheartsandroses · 22/04/2026 14:31

And much more the decor you'd expect from a 70yo.

Agreed! I thought the decor of house 1 was way too modern!

Apprentice26 · 22/04/2026 14:54

It might be to get us slowly ready for an avalanche of house prices going down
Perhaps we’re being mentally prepared like they did with hooray for the Brown shirts
On the off chance that we were invaded by the Nazis

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 14:55

Thought we’d established that right house is the chalet bungalow that needs work?

We don't know, we are assuming.

The first house was the one in the article. The chalet bungalow is just something that might tie in with the length of ownership.

It may of course be neither of them and a completely made up story.

I'm agreeing with you that it's the chalet bungalow, not the one that's been reduced by £10k.

MN seems to have worked that out even if the journalist didn't.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 22/04/2026 14:57

What is the relevance of her age in the OP? Could it be anything to do with the current nasty narrative on here about the ‘rich boomers’?

BobFlowerdewAndChristineWalkdensLoveChild · 22/04/2026 14:57

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 14:34

It's the one in the article but maybe they put the wrong one in. Which means that someone else benefitted from the advertising 😂

Only if they think that everyone telling them their house is waaaaay overpriced, and will never sell, is a benefit 😂

One of the journalist's previous stories was about how Barbie was a trend setter for child free women. So.............

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 14:58

If it is the chalet bungalow, I hope the owner gets in touch with the paper to tell them they're advertising the wrong house.

And the poor owner of house 1 has had their house advertised at 100k under their asking price!

The house shown in the article is the wrong price, hasn’t been reduced and hasn’t been lived in by the owner since 1992.

The chalet bungalow has been reduced from £860k to £750k and hasn’t been sold in the last 30 years.

Which do you think is most likely?

What kind of decor do 70 year olds have then?

VimtoDemon · 22/04/2026 15:07

WallaceinAnderland · 22/04/2026 14:14

What I can't understand though is why the paper would run such a non story. It's an ordinary house which has been on the market for 18 months and only reduced by 10k. So what is the story? Why is it newsworthy? I don't get it.

Is it newsworthy? More to the point is it then threadworthy?

There are a million non-news stories in the news, just ignore them 🤷

Didn't you know that as soon as you reach retirement age you start yearning for magnolia paint, lacy antimacassars and swirly carpets?

Don’t you mean a 90+ yo? I’m 69 and that looks like my parents stuff who would be over 100 if still here.

Obviously I think it's ridiculous to believe your house is "worth" a penny more than what someone will pay for it.

However I think the article was designed as rage bait at the would-be seller's expense. The ageism in the (extensive) ridiculing of her on (other) social media is really nasty :(

Personally I think the bungalow is more likely but the house is the one the paper linked to in the article they wrote about the house so you can see where the initial confusion comes from.

Even the people commenting on that article think it's the house in the article.

I think they’ve put the wrong house in the article - the woman says she’s lived there since 1992 and the house shown was last sold in 2003.

Much more likely to be this one, which is on at £750k and was reduced in January:

you are right, looks more like that one
