If you stayed following redundancies/restructure what did your workload look like?

My organisation is undergoing a redundancy consultation and some of our best performing full time employees may be going. I am really worried about what this will look like for those left behind and potentially more work coming our way. Workloads are crazily high anyway but management are such that they don't care. They think we should want to work all hours and not complain about the workload. Have you experienced cuts in staff and if so, how was the workload?

Yes. If the cuts are that deep, the expectation is staff pick up the slack. I was very pleased / relieved when my number was eventually called.

I wish I had applied for VR now. Not knowing where I'd be financially in a few months time when the money ran out stopped me.

I also wfh two days a week which I negotiated with senior management when I moved far from the office. If they would've turned down my I wouldn't have moved as my commute would've been to expensive. Now I'm really anxious that with less bodies in the office I'll be asked to go into the office more than I can afford. I'm struggling financially at the moment anyway barely making ends meet.

It depends on the reasons. I worked somewhere we we lost 25% of our headcount but that was because our pipeline of work had dried up so nobody had to do more necessarily, it was a reflection of what was needed to deliver the work. If the workload is high though and not driving redundancies, that’s a very different situation. I’ve been in that situation too and I ended up leaving after 6 months or so because the workload was crazy and it was clear management didn’t want to address it.

My workplace has just opened up VR and I’m applying - not a chance the workload will go down & there’s no room to pick up more

Yep, University professional services role and cuts and redundancies have been brutal. Nobody was replaced and workload stayed the same - actually increased slightly due to cuts elsewhere in the university.

It's pretty rough and morale is low - we're trying to keep everything running as much as possible for students and so there's lots of burnout. No pay rise for years (except for senior management of course 🙄)

Absolutely nothing else to go to so I'll be clinging on until retirement!

I'm in this position. My post was made redundant but sadly no VR just redeployment. I've been reallocated to a team that is in the office more often. It's a 180 mile round trip and the best part of 2 hours each way. I'm trying to hold out to only going in to the office once a fortnight which is what my current arrangement is, but I think my new manager will insist on twice a week and I really can't do that

I work for a charity that did this over the last couple of years. They made half the staff in my team redundant and then left us waiting. It took them over a year to formulate the plan of what they wanted. During this time, they left all of the work to be shared between the staff members who hadn’t left/been made redundant. It’s now a year later and we still don’t have a clear plan of what we are supposed to be doing, half of the (remaining) team are on long term sick for stress and people are jumping ship like crazy. And spoiler alert- they’re also not being replaced! It’s a shit show, it’s been two years and still not sorted and it’s at that crazy level where those of us still here are coasting and laughing so we don’t cry. Sorry, probably not the answer you’re after but it’s the truth
