What happens at a scan?

I've never had a scan before, I have to go for one later this week for an abdominal issue.
Do they ask you to get undressed?
Will they want me to wear a gown? I'm fat and they never fit, gowns give me the horrors.
How will they do the scan if I'm fat, do they have to press hard?
What should I wear?
Thanks

Depends what kind of scan.

MRI?
ultrasound?

Is it an ultrasound? If it is then you dont have to get undressed. You just pull your top up out the way or your bottoms down a bit. It can be hard to get a good image with extra weight (im overweight!), so they might ask you to move around a bit. It shouldn't hurt though, so let them know if they press too hard.

I assume you mean an ultrasound. Whether you have to get undressed depends on the sort of scan. Just on the outside of the abdomen, no, you just have to lift your shirt slightly and pull trousers down a bit so they can put the wand over the area that needs scanning. If it’s a transvaginal scan, the wand needs to be inserted into the vagina so yes, you have to get undressed. This is likely only if it’s your cervix/uterus/ovaries they are looking at. If it’s, say, your gallbladder, it definitely won’t be transvaginal.

It can sometimes be trickier if you are very obese. I’m fat, but not obese. I’ve had many ultrasounds and never had any issues. Generally speaking, it’s an easy thing to have done and not too invasive.

If one gown doesn't fit, you should be able to ask for 2. Put one on with the opening at the back. Put the other on like a jacket and the opening is at the front (and therefore, covering your backside).

If you go to the NHS website and put the type of scan into the search bar, there should be a page with more information.
