Moth eradication help needed

We have a moth issue - clothes moths - been trying to get rid with the pheromone traps and even the microscopic wasps but they’re still around.
I called up a couple of companies and also googled types of treatments.
So it’s heat vs chemical.
We have a cat which makes it harder - heat would be less harmful and it’s done and dusted - but involves a lot of prep for us. Cat is old and hasn’t been to cattery for years and would freak so I’m nervous if putting her in for even a few hours.
Any advice on this if you’ve been in similar position.
Heat is a lot more too at £1400 although that isn’t the only consideration.

Where are the moths? If you have wool carpets replace them, as you will never get rid of the moths in a carpet unless you burn your house down.

No advice OP but following with interest. We have discovered moths eating our wool carpets. 😩Thankfully, only in hidden spots at the moment like under the beds.

Same issue i have traps everywhere I kill everyone i find and spray but because I have cats i have to be careful clean spray one area exclude the cats ventilate the room and continue im still finding them but less now

The worst was when my cat stepped in a pheromone trap i tried easing it off and he tried running waxing his leg fur a little ehrn he did i then had to chase him down and scrub his leg off it was awhile before he trusted me again

I can’t really comment about the heat vs chemical specifically but I will say that to do chemical treatment properly is also a lot of work. We emptied all wardrobes etc, and completely emptied our loft and all storage cupboards into a storage unit. Clothes were bagged up and only reintroduced to the house once laundered and tumble dried, dry cleaned or frozen. This was a good few years ago now. It resolved 99% but we still use pheromone traps and catch a few. It sounds like both methods involve a lot of work.

Hmm, a bit extreme! They’re flying about so not sure where they’re laying eggs. I haven’t seen damage to carpets.

I think that’s where they’re laying eggs go. We haven’t seen damage, just the fuckers flying about.

Oh dear, poor puss! Yeah, cat here too - makes it much tricker. I bought these wasp things that eat moths but they’re still around.

Indeed. I really cba with all that, plus idk what we’d do with the cat when the treatment was going on. Might just have to spray liberally and exclude the cat from the room for a few hours.

You need to move furniture and vacuum underneath regularly. They don’t do well with disruption. If you are moving and airing and vacuuming frequently they don’t seem to get a toehold.

Will try a bit more airing now it’s getting warmer. We have a cleaner but I will ask her to make sure she’s vacuuming under the sofas at least.

In dms house it was things like the corner where a free standing bookshelf almost met the wall.

i had loads last year, i caught loads in the sticky traps and throughly enjoyed whacking the buggers who fluttered around....ive had hardly any this year..about 5 which ive dispatched, none caught in sticky traps ...good luck eradicating yours

This.

I think you need to have a really good hunt around for the nest. We had a few flying around on occasion but not enough to be that bad. However I moved a chest of drawers one day and the carpet was decimated under it. An aggressive hoover and steam treatment, and I haven’t seen one for ages. So find the source and zap it there!

stayathomegardener · 21/04/2026 21:52

Freeze all clothes for 3 days minimum then rewash.
Hoover frequently and throw the bag away each time or put sticky tape over the nozzle between hoovers.

Damp dusting is useful.

Moth Out phenomenon traps are brilliant, Moth London useless on side by side testing here.

I believe it can take up to three years to eradicate them fully.

Inherited the buggers from my Mum.

Most of ours were in the hall, stairs and landing carpet and we took the drastic step of ripping it out and replacing with wood flooring as it wasn't in particularly good condition anyway. Haven't seen any since.
