Does your home feel luxurious to you?

I am a real homebody. When I go on holiday I miss my home, a lot of it is I find it really stressful- especially with two children - living out of cases and being in unfamiliar environments. I love it when I get home and everything is in its place. Obviously I’m constantly fighting a losing battle to keep things tidy with the children but where I can I try to make home feel nice.

we moved into a 3 bed semi detached new build 4 years ago - the first home we had ever bought. So it’s not a luxury mansion or particularly large house in any way but I have tried my best to make the most of the space and would love tips on what other people do to elevate their home. It’s not just about the aesthetic it’s about making it feel lovely for you.

About a month ago I treated myself to some lovely white company pillows and towels. I like to have all matching mugs and plates. I also bought some lovely neom diffusers. What do other people do to try and make their homes feel like a kind and lovely place to retreat to?

The more expensive underlay for carpet. Was only a couple of pounds a metre more but the difference is amazing. Feels like walking on marshmallow. I also chose a carpet that is almost white - which seems crazy and probably is, but it's stunning.

White carpet is definitely luxury! Bet it looks stunning too. We had to go for hard floors throughout our downstairs because of my dogs, but nothing beats the feel of new carpet and great underlay. It makes a huge difference to foot feel.

Everyone thinks I lost my mind but it's so lovely.

I had 20yrs of horrible cheap laminate so it feels like a new home. The biggest difference is the laminate was bomb proof and I didn't have to care about spilling anything. Now I have the most unforgiving floor covering when it comes to spills. To say I'm paranoid is an understatement 😂

I've never owned a hoover till now either. I just swept the hard floors. Now I'm obsessed with the 'hoover arcs' on the carpet when I've hoovered 😁

My DM and her best friend have similar tastes, think:-

linen bedsheets
posh hand wash and hand cream in bathrooms
folded white hand towels in guest bathroom
always tablecloth
clean and nice Crockery and glasses
nice flooring and carpets
nice cushions

And so on. They don’t spend a fortune but it all looks luxe and comfy. My mum eg always wanted a swing-seat in the garden as her rich childless aunt and uncle who she stayed with as a child had one. She relaxed and read Agatha Christie books there. So when she came into money when I was 9 or so, that was one of the first luxuries she bought. We were a bit shabby poor before that!

DM doesn’t have white carpet as it’s a bugger to keep clean and she has a dog, cat and 2 young GC.

Parts of it, yes. I love my home. Some parts are transitional rooms like the kids playroom and bedrooms so luxury wasn’t the main factor whilst decorating them.

frozendaisy · 19/04/2026 15:40

Not at all luxurious as we have two mid-late teens with their friends and us and our friends
But it must be welcoming, which to me is luxury, we like people, as they don’t seem to want to go anywhere else!

So in the sense it’s full of life, laughter and love yes that’s luxury to me. In terms of interior design, lord no!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 19/04/2026 16:14

My home is luxurious in one sense, nice sofas, nice throws and cushions. But I don’t like The White Company stuff (so kill me), carpets are upstairs only, no white carpets. I have a mix and match of inherited antiques, junk shop finds and so on. Lots of art, gilt framed mirror, wrought iron fireplaces with tiled surrounds. Taken a few years to perfect though. As I hate doing decorating and so on. Hate the upheaval. And it’s not a show home. It’s a house/home.
I like nice candles but they don’t have to be Diptyque. Hand washes I use anything got some Rituals ones now. Egyptian cotton sheets. I have a cat and prefer a lived in luxe look. And it veers on more trendy eg in hall/living room. My ex NDN has money but spends it on doing up all her houses over and over. She loves doing it. Luxe trendy too. Not moving now!

I really CBA to change up rooms every few years. If you look at pp of mine you’ll see a dated bathroom. I only got that (tiles, sink etc) at reduced cost from my auntie who used to own a tile company. It’s getting changed next year. I could afford to do it now but I hate the upheaval and getting the work done! So have left it. And I hate looking at new products or going round showrooms partly because I take ages to decide what I like and then change my mind! 😬

SpottyAlpaca · 19/04/2026 16:24

Any chance you could come round to my house to sort the place out, OP? Luxurious, co-ordinated, orderly & tidy it most certainly is not.

MikeRafone · 19/04/2026 16:59

How we dress our home comes down to taste, same as how we dress ourselves. What I like will not be to other people’s taste, visa versa on other people’s tastes and idea of luxury

to me hotel furnishing style is not luxury, other than the linen on the bed. I don’t like cluttered or minimalist as both to extreme for me. I do like flow, low level type interior. The book by Sarah Susanka
the not so big house has much I like

DandyPanda · 19/04/2026 17:04

It doesn’t feel luxurious, but it feels like home and it’s perfect for us. I doubt other people would think it’s luxurious but that isn’t the vibe I like for my house.

I guess most peoples homes feel like home to them? Im Confused by the comment,as it is your home, so would feel like home? Unless you just moved in?

or are saying if it was luxurious it wouldn’t feel like home to you? You prefer a non luxury vibe?

sorry your comment caught my attention.

WinterFrogs · 19/04/2026 17:19

I don't think anyone would describe my house as luxurious but it is clean and mostly clutter free, which I think is what makes it comfortable and peaceful. I don't go for candles, cushions or throws, but I have everything I need here. I'm a big believer in keeping it smelling fresh so if I'm in the house there are windows open. I currently have a cat lying on my chest, dinner is on, DH is mowing the lawn and I feel gratitude and contentment. That's luxury to me 😊

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 19/04/2026 17:21

Plants and flowers, nice candles. Nice bedding.

MikeRafone · 19/04/2026 17:24

I’ve lived in a lot of houses and some of them haven’t felt like home, just somewhere that I lived. This house has everything that I love and is decorated exactly how I like it but it doesn’t have the things that people on here are saying make their home luxurious.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 19/04/2026 17:56

To answer the original question: no, not yet, but my house will feel luxurious to me one day, when it is finally finished! (I currently have a huge long list of DIY projects to attend to first).

I have 1,000 thread-count bedding, a lot of books, a piano, several pets, privacy film on the windows (I had a very nosy neighbour, but it means that I can wander around in the house without frightening any delivery people through the windows with my untamed mane), shutters, artwork and furniture that I love, bone china crockery that matches, matching Egyptian cotton towels, and lots of antique things dotted around! Oh, and I'd like to add 'a beautiful garden' to the list, but that's also a work in progress...

Ineedanewsofa · 19/04/2026 18:01

Yes, overall, because of the amount of space we have. Specific rooms feel luxurious, others haven’t been done yet 😂 All the beds have great mattresses which is definitely a luxury

Ah, I’ve also lived in a lot of houses, some I liked more than others, but they were all my home.

Sheknowsaboutme · 19/04/2026 18:14

It’s not luxurious but cosy. I live in a type of house which people would pay to stay in.

snowdonia.250 year old cottage, views of mountains and sea.

i like modern country look.. No ikea furniture in my house. It just doesn’t fit well.

bright and airy
blankets
fresh flowers
espa diffuser
lamps (never a big light on!)
candles

holidays arent a priority to us. Its a smallholding and we have stock to look after. Its our choice.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 19/04/2026 19:25

Well not at the moment coz it’s got no kitchen, no bathrooms and no roof but hopefully by the time I finish this reno it will!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/04/2026 19:31

Mine feels luxurious to me. But that's because after the last thirty years of five kids, dogs, cats, chickens, ponies, hamsters, rats, gerbils in an unheated five bedroom falling-down wreck of a place, having my own tiny little two-bed cottage with one dog feels FABULOUS.

Everything is mine, there's no mess, if I clean something it stays clean. I have fresh flowers, nice bedding, log burner for warmth. That is luxury to me.

BobbieTables · 19/04/2026 22:39

Plants, Books, art on the walls, Comfy bed, colour, lots of blankets, comfy sofa, never run out of tea and coffee

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 20/04/2026 14:35

Compared to the house I grew up in it’s literally The Ritz. My childhood home was always clean (my mum is the queen of clean) but there were 6 of us and three bedrooms, the outside was horrible, and it was on an estate so whenever we tried to make the outside nice people just trashed it. It was also always bloody cold.

Now my kids all have their own rooms, I can afford to put the heating on, and I have a cool workspace. I do tutoring so we’ve converted the garage into a classroom space and if I do say so myself it looks great. My dream classroom.

A lot of people would probably think our decor is a bit “childish” but I think

  1. It’s whimsical, I wouldn’t expect an whimsyless person to understand.
  2. We have three children so it is to an extent a very child centric environment. I want them to feel it’s their home and I also want them to be able to access things like snacks, drinks, games ect without me having to help them.
