Parents of "girly" 9 year old girls

DD9 is friends with a girl who is a bit "older" than her in some ways e.g. is quite into make up, has a phone, is generally a bit more of a tween than DD, who is basically a (nerdy) kid who climbs trees. I have been tasked with finding a birthday gift for this friend and obviously want to get something she will like, but also not anything which will be either inappropriate or too childish. DD and I hit on a bath bomb making kit as something which would be fun but also suitable for someone who likes glitter and makeup. But I would be really grateful for insight as to whether your 9 year old would find it fun or babyish.

My dd (10) would love that

tnorfotkcab · 18/04/2026 19:51

If DD thinks she'll like it, then do that.

bunnyvsmonkey · 18/04/2026 19:53

My DD 10 (nearly 11) would love that.

Also there's a lot of bravado around this age. It's all "yeah so I like don't even play with toys now" while secretly spending hours with sylvanians.

@tnorfotkcab DD is lovely and smart, but not always the most socially aware child. This is the first year of school that she's had a really good female friend, so I just want to help her navigate things a little.

I have a nearly 10 year old who her and her friends love tree climbing and make up. They would all love a bath bomb making set but some one the packaging can be very young child oreientated.

My 10 year old (going in 14) would find this a little childish to be honest. She’d much prefer an actual bath bomb for lush or somewhere similar

This, plus as a parent I would have to regift this because it would irritate my daughter's skin. I think a lush bath bomb is better that's picked by your DD. They usually do little gift sets there too which I love and my daughter does.

Yeahyeahyeahnooooo · 18/04/2026 21:14

My dd would find this a bit young, but would love something like a fave mask that goes in the fridge, or a nail varnish set or a plain tote and some fabric pens or suchlike.

Brainstorm23 · 18/04/2026 21:17

£15 in an envelope? Not personalised or very imaginative but you really can't go wrong with cash.

Easylifeornot · 18/04/2026 21:33

I agree it’s a bit young. I would the child’s parent for some ideas.

CeleriacRoot · 18/04/2026 21:44

This is helpful, thank you. I'll check with her mum. DD just isn't the best yardstick for these things!

It’s a bit young, maybe more for an 6/7 year old. Also not everyone has or takes baths. I would go with an actual bath bomb (Primark is great for this), some face masks, lightly tinted fruity lip balm, that sort of thing. Or a Boots gift voucher depending on how much you want to spend. This is definitely the age when they love going and choosing something themselves. Cash is also great. Mine always love cash instead of more tat.

TokyoSushi · 18/04/2026 21:59

A little set from Lush, including a bath bomb would be lovely.

PurpleThistle7 · 18/04/2026 22:00

My daughter can’t use anything scented etc on her skin so unless you’re sure she can I’d steer towards nail polish sets instead. Honestly nothing wrong with checking with the other mum too - I always appreciate this and usually run ideas past other parents unless I know the child well.

PurpleThistle7 · 18/04/2026 22:01

Oh and yes to the cash - boring but much loved. My 9 year old son and his friends seem to just exchange Lego vouchers in circles lately.

DrEmilyCrabtree · 18/04/2026 22:03

I'd advise checking with the mum, just because my dd has sensitive skin so we are wary of this kind of thing. Nail varnish type stuff might be better, or crafty things eg bracelet making possibly. Cash/vouchers are always a good idea

Fingernailbiter · 18/04/2026 22:09

Fabric marker pens and a plain white t-shirt.

bunnyvsmonkey · 19/04/2026 07:58

Fimo is actually a good shout if you want to steer away from bath and beauty. I wouldn't be pleased with that nail set from pp as a parent because it's a pile of plastic and the varnishes are always awful. I'd rather just get some nice colours from super drug if we do nails.

We recently had a playdate with one of DD's (10) friend who I would describe as the most eye rolling and aspiring teenager of her group and they sat for hours making fairy houses out of fimo! But it can also be used for jewellery etc.

Fatiguedwithlife · 19/04/2026 08:08

My 9 yo (10 in summer) can’t use bath bombs, sensitive skin.
She’s still into her Capybaras, taba squishies and little bags from Claire’s. Stationary is always a win too.

I've just remembered this is what I've got the last few 9-10 year olds for birthdays https://amzn.eu/d/0a1MQgff

Needohs are a massive thing at the minute.

I have had plenty of those bath bomb things. Not worth the money and irritating on skin. I always regift or donate to charity.

CeleriacRoot · 19/04/2026 10:52

Thanks all.

Really depends on a kid but generally I think it's a great gift or you can go with a scented candle making kit or something like that. My friends' DD is 10 and she's also very girly but she loves science kits and things like kinetic sand so you'll never know. If your DD says she'll like it then she probably really will!
If she has a favourite artist or band you can't go wrong with getting her something related to them, could be a t-shirt with a print or a poster calendar with their photos or accessories like keychains or stickers related to them, etc.
