I have to say that I don't get them. And I say that as a keen camper, trailer tent and now caravan owner.

Why do you want one and what does it do better than a standard tent?

Also, check if you're car can handle that much weight on its roof ( the tent plus people).

I have a 'Howling Moon' roof tent that opens up like a pop up book. You climb a ladder to access it. It has a built in comfy mattress, you get a nice breeze, good views lol

I am so not tempted at all by those! I need my tent space to include somewhere to stand up while I am getting dressed.

If you need to get out to go for a wee when it's raining, your bedding is right by the door flap, no way to stop things getting wet.

Can't go off on a day trip during a canping holiday without taking the whole tent with you.

Although I can see a tent box as an improvement on the tiny coffin-sized so-called "2 man" mini tents, just by being up off the ground, I don't camp in anything that small.

Ah yes, we often use our car for day trips while camping, hadn’t thought of that.
The appeal is it’s warmer to sleep as it’s off the ground, and therefore extends the camping season. And the mattress sounds more comfortable than bloody airbeds.
We have a large airbeam tent which we love but I like the idea of having the sleeping space on the car ready to go, no pumping or tent pegs.

Maybe I’ll just invest in a better camping bed

I don’t have one, but live near a tourist attraction where people often use them to wild camp.

I have very often heard the tourists comment on how much they have struggled in the winds. It’s a very windy area and I understand the wind hits the tent and rocks the car. I imagine it’s probably perfectly safe but seemingly feels scary if you are inside on a stormy night.
