Do people in wealthy areas look down on ‘’ordinary’’ jobs?

Title: Do people in wealthy areas look down on “ordinary” jobs?

Another slightly awkward post from me, but I’d genuinely like some outside perspective.

I’m a man in my 30s, no kids, and I work as a bus driver. I live in quite a wealthy part of Surrey (think big houses, lots of Range Rovers, that sort of thing), and lately I can’t shake the feeling that people around here are pretty dismissive of what I do.

The job itself is fine—steady, decent enough pay, and I take pride in doing it properly. But socially, it’s starting to feel a bit uncomfortable. When people ask what I do, there’s often a noticeable change in tone. Conversations seem to dry up, or I get polite-but-patronising comments. A couple of times people have been outright rude—nothing dramatic, just that slightly sneering, “oh… right” kind of reaction.

It’s hard not to compare myself when most people locally seem to be in high-paying professions. There’s definitely a sense that if you’re not earning big money or climbing some kind of career ladder, you’re a bit of an oddity.

I don’t think I’m imagining it entirely, but I also wonder if I’m becoming oversensitive to it. Do people in more affluent areas tend to look down on jobs like mine, or is this just a few individuals and I’m letting it get to me?

For what it’s worth, I work hard, I’m reliable, and I’m contributing—but it doesn’t always feel like that counts for much in certain circles.

Interested to hear honest views.

Some probably do, some probably don't. Most won't care.

I agree with this. People are generally not thinking about us like we think they are.

Oh bore off. There are more than just parenting boards and unless someone says what sex they are, you wouldn’t know.

Laiste · 17/04/2026 21:22

Who are these people you're chatting to and giving you this feeling? Where are you meeting them?

If it's people moving in the same social circles as you then its more likely they just can't think of any questions to ask about your job rather than looking down on it.

ladykale · 17/04/2026 21:26

Yeah I think it happens. Strangers often ask job to size up whether you’re “worth knowing” or likely to be useful to them / potentially be in their social circle.

Mayflower282 · 17/04/2026 21:29

They probably think they won’t have much in common with you and therefore dont want to invest in the effort of a friendship.

Ookl · 17/04/2026 21:29

You’ve asked this many times, the reason I am bringing that up, is I think you judge yourself for your job far far more than others do, hence you keep asking variations of this.

people will look down on others for fifty billion reasons, you can’t live obsessing over this, if you got a ceo job, some people would judge you for the shoes you wore, or the car you drove.

are you happy in your job? That is the main thing

Newgirls · 17/04/2026 21:30

I’d be very happy to chat to you. Far more interesting than the usual accountants who live near us. If want to know if it’s stressful, fun, worst passenger etc

If you’re going to use AI to create a post at least remove the title section.

Hannaseed · 17/04/2026 21:33

Are they using AI to drive buses now?

Morepositivemum · 17/04/2026 21:34

There’s a lot of people on here that talk about class and wealth. It’s only a thing if you make it in one in your head.

Bluegreenbird · 17/04/2026 21:34

My son’s best mate’s dad is a bus driver and we’re in Surrey. He’s an intelligent and interesting man and the family is overall intellectual and arty. He loves his job for the lack of office politics and flexible shifts. Pays about the same as many office jobs and worked for their family as his wife works long hours in her teaching job.
He has said he gets some small minded people that judge him but he doesn’t care. So. You’re probably right that some people will look down but some people will judge most choices.

VeraWang · 17/04/2026 21:35

Some will, some won't.

Move on, it doesn't matter.

Comparelightly · 17/04/2026 21:36

Here’s some other titles you can use so they won’t be so judgemental…

Senior Commute Optimization Specialist
Head of Mass Transit Excellence
Chief Road Network Utilization Officer
Managing Director of Route Performance
Enterprise Mobility Commander

I live in what is considered a “wealthy” area, also in Surrey. My dad got expelled from school at 14, my mum left with no qualifications and was a cleaner in a hotel, and I was the first person in my entire family to go to university. I don’t look down on anyone and no one I’ve met since living here does either (I suppose there is an element of me feeling more comfortable with other people who have backgrounds similar to mine, but not all my friends do). My parents worked damn hard to give me all the opportunities they could, I admire them more than anyone.

You’ve posted about this more than once, @Benny91. Why is it preying on your mind?

Bobdylo · 17/04/2026 21:47

I live in one of the wealthiest parts of the country (not Surrey granted but similar) and earn minimum wage (in a shop, they have shops in wealthy areas) I’ve never experienced anyone looking down on me over it

doghasnoteeth · 17/04/2026 21:53

I live in an affluent area and work with people who are not so fortunate. I absolutely bloody love and respect everyone I work with! They have had a choice ,claim benefits or work on NMW …they all work crazy hours to pay their way . Start believing in yourself and be positive!

SingtotheCat · 17/04/2026 23:14

Be proud OP, I couldn’t drive a massive fuck off bus all over the place all day!
It’s a job with huge social and environmental value and I would love to ask for your funny tales of humanity.

SingtotheCat · 17/04/2026 23:22

Hannaseed · 17/04/2026 21:33

Oh FFS I answered this genuinely and naively, but yeah, it really is AI and I don’t see what the point is?
Have they cyber-enslaved MN to harvest responses to this to train itself and then put another question out to get more data? Is this turning dystopian or have I just invented a new conspiracy theory?

FernandoSor · 17/04/2026 23:35

Only very insecure ones. I also live in Surrey, in the very wealthy ‘old money’ rural bit. Walk into our village pub and you’ll find incredibly wealthy, if quietly so, people having a pint with the postie and the plumber.

Veraverrto · 17/04/2026 23:39

Any decent human being wouldn't care and not ask, or would show interest if they do ask.
Anyone else isn't worth your salt.
