Learner Driver insurance insanity??

Totalinsanity · 17/04/2026 16:26

Please tell me there are better options!! We have a multi car policy. I have just tried to put dc17 onto the insurance of our 10 year old 1 litre engine car and was quoted £1600 extra to pay till the policy ends in June. I asked 3 times to clarify and they confirmed each time this was correct. This surely can’t be standard can it?!

That does seem insane for two months. Cheaper to just have a greater number of driving lessons, surely?

Sunseed · 17/04/2026 16:30

That sounds more like the premium for a new driver than a learner. But maybe the insurance company doesn't want the risk so is pricing high.

Look for a standalone learner driver policy instead for a comparison.

partystress · 17/04/2026 16:31

Look at temporary insurance. You can go for as little as two hours so just pay for when you are taking them out. Veygo was who we used. Marmalade is another.

H202too · 17/04/2026 16:33

Have you tried Marmalade or Veygo?

Sorry Cross posted.

Veygo is the Vey to go.

See what I did there!

I'll get my🧥

That seems a lot for learner drivers. In my experience, it was relatively cheap to add a learner (but horrifically expensive once they had their licence - £1k+).

TheKittenswithMittens · 17/04/2026 16:44

300,000 uninsured drivers take to the roads every day. It is an epidemic.

That is not surprising given these prices and the fact that public transport is so poor in many areas that people can't get to work without a car.

I'm not condoning it by the way, just saying.

Rowgtfc72 · 17/04/2026 16:48

Was cheaper for dd to have her own insurance as dh drives a 1.4 corsa which is classed as a hot hatch.
We took out a loan and got a 1.4 Adam ( basically the same engine as the corsa without the turbo) and stuck a black box in it.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 17/04/2026 16:48

I used marmalade for my dc - it worked well and didn't cost loads.

LifeOnTheVeg · 17/04/2026 16:54

Adding to the chorus of ‘just get temporary insurance when required’.

DD used Veygo when she wanted to use my car as a learner or new driver. Quick and easy.

Minnie798 · 17/04/2026 16:55

Covered on demand. Used for both my dc.

handmademitlove · 17/04/2026 16:58

You can get "over the top" policies for learner drivers that are separate to the main policy - some have been suggested by PPs. They were much cheaper. We used this while they were learning to drive, then added them as a named driver once they had passed their test.

Totalinsanity · 17/04/2026 17:01

Thanks guys - will try marmalade and veygo! I genuinely nearly cried after the call with the insurance company - just feel screwed over all the time at the moment! Everything is overpriced and feels like every company is profiteering (looking at you water companies, electricity providers, petrol stations etc etc).

We used Marmalade for DD, last year seemed reasonable and she was driving Dh' 1.6 L focus.

Washinginthesun · 17/04/2026 17:10

Definitely use Veygo. You don’t change your policy it just adds them on and is reasonable.
Insurance when they have passed - now that’s crazy!!

Suntree32 · 17/04/2026 17:12

We've used Collingwood as a separate learner insurance policy. £160 for 6 months on a 1.5 diesel SUV, 5 years old. Way, way cheaper than when they actually pass 😬

Bendallbee · 17/04/2026 17:14

I think that must be a quote to add your DC as a named driver rather than a learner driver. Your own car just needs it's owner insurance and then you need special learner insurance for your DC. You should be able to just pay for however long you need it - i.e. 3/6 months

Try Collingwood OP, we used Marmalade to start with but then Collingwood for both DC and they were much better so simple! DC2 just paid for her to have 6 months learner insurance on our little car. She then did her test in it first time and passed!

You can also find referral codes for Collingwood for money off the policy.

Executrixnotextraordinaire · 17/04/2026 17:15

Agree Veygo, rolling monthly payment, I upgraded something cant recall what else it covered but 17 yr old DD, 4 year old 1.4 MPV was £43 a month. Meant she could use it every time she and I went anywhere rather than intermittent cover.

When she passed and got a car, added DH and I onto her policy, took it from £1900 down to £1100. This was Hastings Direct with black box.

ghostyslovesheets · 17/04/2026 17:15

DD has taken out month by month learner driver insurance on my car - cost her about £40 a month

Villanellesproudmum · 17/04/2026 17:21

Adrian Flux you can choose the time and go on as a driver and it’s a lot cheaper.

Villanellesproudmum · 17/04/2026 17:24

It’s it’s your own car, sorry misread I unused Marmalade I think, it was about £5 an hour whilst I supervised.

Mimilamore · 17/04/2026 17:44

Felt your pain… we are going through something like this. We were backed into by a works flatbed lorry. No fault of ours, we were paid fairly swiftly but unfortunately our insurance is due today and until the third, at fault party, pay our insurers admitting fault then our insurance has rocketed to over £2,000!!! Makes me feel sick, so we are at the behest of waiting now and this makes my husband housebound as walking any distance not an option.
Like you, feel completely screwed over.
We were the innocent party!!!

Shhhhhhhhhh24 · 17/04/2026 17:50

That's not right surely? Mine was £127 ISH for 6 months of 17 year old learner on our 2009 2.2 ltr diesel!?
