Puppy - smelly carpets

We’re getting a puppy and, although I’m excited, I’m seriously apprehensive about the house smelling doggy. We have carpet everywhere except kitchen and bathrooms. To make matters worse, it’s a very pale colour and only a year old so I won’t be ripping it out and replacing with hard woods.

Please can I ask you very knowledgeable Mumsnetters for tips on how to stop my house smelling doggy?

Our dog doesn’t really go on carpets. I certainly would not be giving a new puppy run of the house. It’s very important they learn rules and boundaries or will become an absolute nightmare from a training perspective. We have a large energetic working breed. As a puppy/young dog, she was in her crate in the kitchen unless she was out for supervised play and training, mostly outdoors. They sleep about 22 hours a day to start.

She is 4 and even now, she lives in the kitchen (that’s where her bed is) or is outside with us. She does not go on carpets except for special occasions (Christmas if we’re all watching a film in the lounge) and doesn’t ever go on beds or furniture. Our house does not smell of dog and we have never had an accident on carpet (only once or twice in kitchen in first week). She is very happy spending time with us, training, walks, playing, but she also happily goes to bed when we do something else or go out. No barking, no separation anxiety, because we set those firm boundaries from the start, so she’s very secure and feels very comfortable in her safe place (which is the kitchen).
