What's the best way to sell a car?

We are thinking about selling one of our cars as we don't really need two anymore. Is it best to sell privately or use a company like we buy any car?

How did you sell your car?

It really depends on what type of car it is to be honest and the value. You will usually get more £ for a private sale as any dealership/company are going to pay less than it's worth in order to make a profit when they sell it.
If it's a high value car, it's less likely to sell quickly on the likes of facebook marketplace as people are reluctant to hand over a large sum of money with essentially no come back if there is something wrong with the car.
If it's an older car, be prepared for a lootttttt of messages and viewers offering well below your asking price. It can take up a bit of time.
If it's somewhere in the middle, it really just depends how much hassle you're willing to put up with for a private sale or if you'd rather get a few £k less for hassle free handover.
Bear in mind for private sale people will likely want to test drive the car before parting with money so consider how you'd feel about that. My OH is happy for them to come out as a passenger with him driving but not for them to drive the car as they would not be insured.
I've used we buy any car and car supermarket before and they were fine for me. Gave the full value quoted with no quibble but my cars were immaculate. If there's any damage (no matter how minor) or worn tyres etc that you don't declare they will take money off for that when you present the car.

I’ve sold with We Buy Any Car and Motorway, I much preferred Motorway as you give them detailed pictures up front so there’s less scope for them to knock the price down (there was no price chipping by the dealer).

Plus with WBAC you take the car to them (Motorway dealers come to you). I prefer the ease of selling to a dealer over slightly more money for the stress of a private sale.

@SlipperyLizard will have a look at Motorway it's not a company ive heard of before, they sound really good. It would be fantastic if they could collect from a time saving point of view and would make things more efficient.

@bananamachinewater it's a Land Rover Discovery around 5 years old. I've no idea it's worth now to be honest. A lot of helpful points in your post thanks.

We used motorway to sell our last car and didn’t have a good experience unfortunately. We were contacted by a dealer through motorway who haggled down the price then when they came to collect tried to get another £300 off (£1800 car) they were really cheeky and just assumed we would agree as they were there and said how far they’d travelled. We had been completely transparent about the condition of the car with lots of pictures. Between me and my husband we held firm and they paid the agreed price in the end but it was an hour of them trying to barter us down and us having to stay firm.

I used WBAC and had a very positive experience. I visited them the first time just to get a valuation as I needed the car for a few more days. Second time I went the valuation had gone up and the guy there said he’d given me an extra discretionary £200. I got over £1k more than the garage I bought my new car from were offering for part-ex. WBAC is very local for me though - in the carpark of the supermarket I go to.
