Where to keep valuables safe during an open house viewing

We've had our house on the market for a fortnight and finally have some viewings on Saturday under the guise of an open house type event.

I have a couple of louis vuitton bags, and big orange louis boxes, some gucci, some cash and some sentimental but sort of valuable jewellery that my mum left me when she died.

My question is what am I supposed to do with it? On Saturday during the open home situation I imagine there will be unsupervised wanderings around.

Should i shove my valuable bits in the loft? Obviously cash and jewellery can be taken in the handbag I am using but what should I do with the rest of it - shove it in the car boot?! Sorry haven't had the designer bags for long and am not used to having valuable things!

Just would like some ideas from others who have had this third world problem! Thanks in advance x

Into the car boot or drop them with a friend for the day. All sorts will be traipsing round your house at an open viewing!

Thank you yes I was thinking car boot too. Thank you. Sort of regret agreeing to the open house now....

Use whatever you can that day and put the rest in the boot or with a friend for the day.

Not the loft, they might want to look in the there.

100% car boot!

I wouldn’t allow unsupervised wandering.

Laushe · 16/04/2026 18:10

Really great suggestions so far. Maybe some indoor cameras would help ease your mind further

Movinandgroovin · 16/04/2026 18:13

Thanks everyone car boot it is. X

Why are you saying “finally” have some viewings when your house has been on for only 2 weeks and one of those was Easter?

Many agents would advise you to keep the designer bling on view so people aspire to your lifestyle…

ZookeeperSE · 16/04/2026 18:15

How many rooms have you got? Could you arrange for a friend/family member to be in each room, supervising? Even if your valuables are safely tucked away, I’d hate thinking random strangers were wandering around and rifling through stuff.

I agree !
do Estate Agents allow people to wonder around unsupervised ?
Are they insured for that ?

When we’ve had open house days people are still timed and escorted around

Movinandgroovin · 16/04/2026 18:19

To be honest ive got so much nonsense around the house I hope there isn't too much snooping. I know that open houses work from a psychological point of view because we bought this house straight after an open house. The only other option is to keep the garage locked and tell the agent it is out of bounds on saturday?

I’d be careful about being seen stuffing your boot with goodies unless you have a driveway with a gate or something.

I’m a bit paranoid about that kind of thing, I’d probably stuff the boot then go for a half hour drive before returning!

We have a driveway but no gate. I think id have to double bag the designer bags and orange boxes with black bin liners before popping into tge car boot!

FFS. Talk about over-dramatising. Do you really all think that opportunist handbag and car thieves target open house viewings?

You do realise the viewers still have to register with the agent, they can’t just wander in off the street.

Yes do that. And come back when a “helpful” family member takes all the rubbish to the local tip.

Movinandgroovin · 16/04/2026 18:29

I should have got the bags after we moved lols

How about putting them inside suitcases, wherever those are stored?

🤔 there was a case this week where burglars were doing exactly this!

A good reason not to let Estate Agents put video a walk though online

TheToteBagLady · 16/04/2026 20:02

I remember a thread from about 2 years ago when a seller had a sentimental item stolen during a viewing. It happens.

ClaredeBear · 16/04/2026 20:04

I would not be leaving valuable items in a car. You might have issues with your insurance in a worst case scenario.
