Would you go into A&E ?

Background: last June I found I had BP of 200/100 + over a week (headaches & chest pain). Sent to A&E & found Pericarditis & was told I had a heart murmer. On BP meds & GTN spray plus HRT now. Age 58, BMI 40
(please don't flame me for this, I have mobility difficulties & am trying to reduce it)

On Monday I was moving a bed. Suddenly ankles & lower legs swelled up, I went very cold & tearful & my chest hurt. I sat down & took my BP which was 84/52. Stayed that way for a bit so held off GTN.
Should have called 111 in hindsight.

Question: since then I have been completely wiped out despite resting yesterday and sleeping OK. Chest pressure, some pain deep in back & shoulder. I had a 'clear' CT Angio last year so Dr says: 'not Angina': GTN usually helps. Should I go into A&E and ask for an ecg/bloods to check all is OK or was this probably just a spasm/ 'angina' episide?

Not calling 111 as they'll send an ambulance & that's not needed. GP has no appts for 6 weeks or even call backs (I called at 8am)

I dont want to waste NHS time. I wish I'd called Monday- would it be too late to 'see anything' now anyway?

Update:

A friend took me to A&E. Was seen about 3 hours later. Very nice Dr. Very thorough. Did bloods, chest x Ray, ecg, active stand test. All okay. 'Not anxiety, not indigestion'. Unlikely to be Pericarditis as ecg & bloods ok, but 30% chance could be'. If no improvement see GP (my GP is awful, my Ds had Heart Failure last year & GP messed up badly). If worsens go back to A&E. Was feeling really reassured.
Just now had giddy, cold & chest pains, checked BP & big drop from 9am. Not sure what it is but it's not gone away with reassurance. Will have quiet weekend & go back in if needed. Thank you for all posts.

It sounds from your post like they said to go back to a&e if it worsens, and it sounds like it has. Shouldn’t you have gone back?

TirednessOnToast · 18/04/2026 07:31

@Aabbcc1235I've had another 'episode,' of the same (chest pain, cold, sudden BP drop, very tired). Not quite as intense as I've not been doing much. If it gets worse I'll go back.
Its a really small hospital & there won't be anyone to do an echo or a Cardiologist over the weekend but A&E will be staffed.

I had a Cardiology appt letter today: phone appt in 8 weeks. This had been typed before my A&E appt so I emailed to explain what's been happening. I got a phone call to ask me to monitor my BP. I can't do much at all without the same symptoms (chest pain, sudden big drop in BP, giddy & cold sweat) so I imagine I'll be back in A&E before then as I called for a GP appt but Receptionist called to say GP considers 'Cardiologist is aware'.

If you can’t do much at all without those symptoms, then you should definitely go back to a&e urgently - this isn’t right.

I’m not sure if it’s the case everywhere but at the one nearest us they take things more seriously if you have attended 3 times for the same thing, so it is worth going back repeatedly if you need to.
