I had Etoricoxib and it worked for me before I finally got my joint replaced, so I would say it depends on what kind of pain you have. It didn’t give me stomach issues, but you can have Omeprazole if it does

A minor annoying rash on my arms and legs has completely disappeared now I no longer take the Etoricoxib but it really was minor.

I've had Diclofenac over the years for various joint/back pains. Usually works brilliantly, but unfortunately isn't working at all for my hip osteoarthritis, but nothing is

NobodysChildNow · 15/04/2026 17:44

Clove oil.

What is it for @SomethingSScintillating?

Sometimes the underlying cause for the inflammation also needs to be treated?

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 15/04/2026 17:46

I'm on etodalac which is a slow release.

HoppityBun · 15/04/2026 17:46

It’s not easy if you need something long term. What and where is the inflammation and do you have a diagnosis?

SomethingSScintillating · 15/04/2026 17:48

Sorry ! It's not a spasm ( which I've had ) but muscle pain in my back that seems to be getting worse and I'm concerned about spasm.
Three days in.

Diclofenac is what I take occasionally, but like any NSAID long term use can cause stomach issues.

isthismylifenow · 15/04/2026 17:50

Memfenic acid?

mindutopia · 15/04/2026 18:13

Muscle pain, see an osteopath. It sounds like you need some soft tissue work done. An anti inflammatory will only work if there is inflammation. Not all muscle pain is caused by inflammation.

SomethingSScintillating · 15/04/2026 18:17

Indont know why but osteopaths scare me

Which one is not the proper one ?

SomethingSScintillating · 15/04/2026 18:17

@mindutopia would they be able to do something on one session?

Memfenic acid?

Mefenamic acid is prescription only.

it’s also one of the less safe nsaids so is generally for specific use, not general pain relief.

O/p you could try a physio first? Assessment appointments are relatively inexpensive and will give you some idea of what the issue is and how to treat.

if your usual brufen/paracetamol isn’t working and it’s getting worse it’s time to consider getting medical advice rather than look for other drugs.

EBearhug · 15/04/2026 18:44

It depends why you can't take them. I can't take NSAIDs, because they're contraindicated with one of my prescription meds. That means no aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, mefenamic acid, etc. This has been very much on my mind lately, as somehow over Easter weekend, I did something to my arm and there was great pain and very little arm movement.

I took cocodamol for the pain, and saw a joints man at the end of last week, since when I have also iced the shoulder for 10 minutes twice a day to help with the inflammation, and have exercises to help rebuild strength and movement. I knew that with such an injury, time would be a big factor, but I also didn't want yo be doing anything to exacerbate it, and I don't want a repeat.

If you are not taking them because of past reactions to ibuprofen and naproxen, I'd have thought that will slso be a risk with other types, but they might be worth trying anyway.

It's worth seeing the experts though.

GentleSheep · 15/04/2026 18:47

You could always try heat on it, that's very good for muscle pain in one's back (although might depend on exactly where, some parts are more awkward to get heat onto).

tobee · 15/04/2026 19:35

Isn’t Valium recommended for muscular pain? Obviously needs a prescription and should be taken using strict medical adherence/guidance

SomethingSScintillating · 15/04/2026 19:42

@tobee I have diaspam

bloomonthisday · 15/04/2026 19:47

Meloxicam works well for me. We are all different!

KatyN · 15/04/2026 19:48

Osteopaths are the proper ones. Chiropractors are the ones you are thinking of!

FeralWoman · 15/04/2026 19:54

Try some Voltaren or Nurofen gel applied to the sore area. I find that it can really help to ease pain. I take meloxicam daily for pain and inflammation. Prescription only in my country.

IMO oesteopaths are a load of rubbish too. DH went to a highly regarded one but it was hocus pocus and a waste of time and money.
