Why are many severely overweight people not using GLP-1 treatments?

Donteatmychips · 15/04/2026 08:39

Just a pondering when I was on a day out yesterday. I know of course that there is an economic cost to GLP1s, but is there really really any excuse to such widespread obesity these days? I was walking around a seaside town and a National Trust property, and I would say a good half of those around were still large. I understand they are not that easily prescribed on the NHS, but I believe you can shop around and find deals from various online pharmacies. Is it just more that people don’t want to?

For full disclosure, I am on a GLP1 that I acquired elsewhere by walking into a pharmacy and just asking for it. Yes, it cost a lot of money and I know I am lucky to be in a position to have done that. I fought being on one for a long time and it’s not a magic bullet, but it does help and I’m grateful for that.

I know that modern versions of obesity are skewed, but I am talking really about people maybe 250lbs or over now, not just a stone to lose.

Mounjaro perfect for you then, cuts fat and muscle mass the studies will tell you 😜

When you’ve seen my comment about not wanting to go on GLP1s why would you suggest that?

It’s actually just rude, and unnecessary. You’ve not even seen me to make such remark.

And it’s women on women. It’s not men attacking women. It’s not men attacking men for using them. It’s women attacking women.

It’s always the same.

My partner has also put weight on in the length of time we’ve been together, we’ve grown together 😂.

Nobody gives a single shiny shit, and I doubt the same judgmental conversation would happen between his peers as we see between women.

I actually started to lose weight because of my health, I’m completely unbothered how many people like OP judge me in a playground with my son, but that judgement comes from women and is exclusively to make other women feel shit about themselves.

It’s more nauseating than any WLI would ever be.

So does cardio and a mild-moderate calorie deficit, but without the added risk of pancreatic cancer or the expense of WLI.

@Verv

I would never have know I had mine, I’m completely asymptomatic, they were found during an ultrasound for my liver because I had slightly raised ALT. If I hadn’t had that scan, I still wouldn’t know now.

The main advice for both is to lose weight, work in progress. But losing weight might actually make the gallstones worse, and apart from not actually dieting and losing it, I’m kind of out of options and stuck in a catch 22 situation.

Nice to know that if they do worsen because of weight loss, it’ll be my own fault for losing weight; despite also needing to!

Yep, it's a bit of a bugger!

My first attack was August last year - but at the time I didnt know or think it was gallstones, felt like terrible trapped wind that ended when I vomited.

Big attack in november ended me in A&E where they did ultrasound and MRI and diagnosed gallstones and put me on the list for removal, but the consultant poked me straight in the gallbladder and said "need to lose a bit more weight before we take it out" so I've kept going with low fat and reduced calories.

Haven't had an attack since then, but dont know if thats as a result of stopping the MJ which can apparently exacerbate symptoms or just being careful with what I eat to avoid the known food triggers.

It is a catch22 though and yep, just remember that through all of this that its your fault for being fat and also your fault for choosing to lose weight.
May the force be with you!

Jeez it was a joke, based on the pages and pages of people detailing the muscle mass loss threats on here 😭

I’ll be honest, I read the first couple pages and the last page.. I’m not reading 850+ posts of people arguing with each other and tearing them down. I just wanted to make a point that not everyone that is considered fat is broke, as lots of comments suggest they are.

No proven risk of pancreatic cancer from
WLIs, but will add to the bingo card.

Lots of people had already made that point (even in the first two pages), I think everyone but the OP has acknowledged that there are a host of individual reasons for not taking them.

All weight loss leads to loss of muscle, even when bodybuilders are cutting, their weight loss leads to loss of muscle mass.

The type of rapid weight loss typically experienced by people on WLI exacerbates muscle loss. It's not rocket science.

Donteatmychips · 17/04/2026 17:03

Yes I’m well aware. That’s been my point the entire time, had you read any of my responses on the last 35 pages.

What’s incorrect? The time you said you didn’t say anyone could find the money? Or that you aren’t the only one that doesn’t understand there are multiple reasons people might not want to use WLIs?

if so, seems odd to start a thread speculating why people might not use them when they’re available.

I realised it was a joke, I just found it insensitive when the poster it was directed at has stated she has health issues. It's also worth considering that muscular women are often ridiculed for their stature, and could, as a result of that, feel a bit sensitive about the topic.

You only need to look at the comments Pink faced in her heyday to see how muscular women are perceived. She was constantly called butch, fat, manly, etc., etc. When you look back at images of her now, outside of the whole heroin chic era, it is even more obvious how wrong all of that was.

@tamade but I didn’t say that at all. I did very clearly say that I am on them myself. Which clearly infers I also have issues with self control.

I also outlined in my OP that I suspected it was financial. I hadn’t, of course, really considered the side effects in-depth. And that is because I am lucky too. I don’t suffer those. Although maybe my hair is falling out…

@MyLuckyHelper i acknowledged here it was more than just money. You said I did not. You were incorrect

Very few have rapid weight loss. Look at any of tne monthly threads in here and you can see that.

being fat doesn’t make us stupid, we understand the risks of rapid weight loss and most of us try to avoid it, personally I averaged at 1.5lbs a week, which seems fairly standard,

for most of us it makes us lose weight longer, consistently , not rapidly

The providers themselves advertise rapid weight loss as a plus point. With Voy, you lose 5 x more than you do through diet and exercise, allegedly, over the same time period.

No one will ever convince me that this is a healthy way to lose weight.

FFS. Rapid it isn't. A lb a week for me. It is boring as fuck and I am fed up with the whole regime of it. But the weight is going. Snd that's what I need.

Oh Christ not back to this nonsense again. YOU HAVE TO ‘DIET’ TO LOSE WEIGHT WHETHER YOU ARE ON WLI OR NOT
