On over 40 abd my dr surferg are now saying I need regular blood pressure checks even though I've never gad high blood pressure. The receptionist at the gp said every month but google says every 5 years for someone like ne who has never had high blood pressure

Are you at risk? Overweight or other health conditions? I know it might seem like overkill but hypertension is a silent killer. My own mum died at 57 a few years ago suddenly due to high blood pressure so for something that doesn’t take very long I’d do it. You can just get your own monitor and monitor at home

CharSiu · 14/04/2026 03:08

Illness can come from nowhere.

Its a simple test you can either buy a monitor and do yourself at home or got in to a pharmacy who relay the results to your Dr or arrange to go to the surgery once a month.

Why believe Google over a Dr who has actually examined you?

Easylifeornot · 14/04/2026 04:07

You obviously need to ask your dr why they want you to do this. Only they will knlw their reasoning. All people on here can do is guess.

I'd take any tests that are offered and be grateful.
Information is power.
Esp a test that is not painful or scary.
High BP can lead to many life limiting conditions.

RoyalPenguin · 14/04/2026 04:20

It sounds unusual to be told you should have monthly blood pressure checks if you don't have high blood pressure. Maybe ask the doctor why? As pp says, you can buy a monitor (they're not expensive) and do it yourself at home.

Raccoonswillonedayrevolt · 14/04/2026 07:51

Where are you based? And are they suggesting you monitor at home or come in every month for tests?
NHS doctors based in surgeries get extra payments for the practice, not personally, based on testing numbers, interventions, prescriptions etc.
Like any job they have targets to hit.

TheyGrewUp · 14/04/2026 07:55

What is your BP? If the message has come from the receptionist, ask them to find out why you need monitoring every month.

IdentityCris · 14/04/2026 09:30

Why would you trust google over your medically qualified doctor who has examined you and has access to all your records?

PokHas · 14/04/2026 09:34

Hypertensions is knows as a silent killer. You could just buy a blood pressure monitor (proper Omron one) and send the results to your GP. We’ve always had one.

Sadcafe · 14/04/2026 09:38

I have high blood pressure, treated for many years, never been asked to check monthly, surgery checks it yearly, I do random tests throughout the year but probably not monthly, but, if there is any family history at all, it’s worth checking, most pharmacies will do it for you or buy a machine and check it yourself, high blood pressure is not known as the silent killer for nothing

mindutopia · 14/04/2026 09:47

Are you on combined hormonal contraceptives? They do get twitchy about your BP if you are after 40. It’s easy to test yourself at home though. I have a home machine and I don’t test monthly (I do have health issues and have had high BP), but I check it periodically.

TalulahJP · 14/04/2026 09:53

they clearly think youre at risk for some reason.
why?
morbidly obese, contraception, ill health, other medicines?

most wouldnt give a shiny shot so it seems like they are very much on the ball.

maybe you need some lifestyle changes?

BauhausOfEliott · 14/04/2026 10:35

Ask the doctor, then.

Rictasmorticia · 14/04/2026 10:39

A home blood pressure machine is very cheap to buy. I think keeping an eye on it is a good idea for peace of mind, Blood pressure is a very reliable method of checking your health.
