Holiday cottage dirty dishes question

Staying in ‘luxury’ cottage. It cost £1510 for the week.

All v nice, but most of the dishes have been put away from dishwasher dirty - one was absolutely clatter in something brown. Chocolate? The previous guest can’t have failed to see it was dirty!

Both oven trays were oily to touch with encrusted food on them. One was unusable as the surface was peeling off.

There were no wooden spoons.

The two frying pans were badly scratched and unusable.

We went out and bought a frying pan and wooden spoons (which we will take home). Owner is very apologetic and asking what she can do to make it up to us. She has already given us an extra bottle of Prosecco.

What would you want/expect in compensation?!

Luxury experience for £1510 a week?
You fell for advertising.
Nothing at that price is luxury.
You can’t even get a centreparc lodge for a family of 4 for a week for double that price from May onwards.

£10k is what you pay for a basic luxury cottage per week.

Centerparcs is irrelevant here, they don't offer standalone self-catering properties

If you can't find a luxury cottage for less than £15ka week, you must be looking in all the wrong places.

And what is 'basic luxury'?

£210-ish per night is not a high price, especially if you’re in a larger property. Since Covid I’ve struggled to find simple self catering for 3 adults under £100 a night.
Says who? Says me.
Rural Wales, low season, 4 nights booked well in advance.
£580 including Genius discount on Booking.com.

Im surprised at that, was looking last night for 2 bedrooms (so can accommodate 3 adults) for mid September for a week, 7 nights (not low or high season), Dorset, wherever, not fussy and plenty were under around 600 (which I was aiming for as my top price)

Turns out I am fussy and decided on a particular town so am paying £740 for one week.

The idea of trusting someone else's washing up in self catering gives me the ick a bit so I always wash everything before using it anyway because some people are grim and lazy. I think the bottle of Prosecco and an apology is plenty op. She will presumable now review her cleaners routine.

Not if the water is changed between each set of guests and you shower before using them…

I've never seen or been sent an inventory list for any cottage I have booked on any platform.

Me neither, over the years (as we never use hotels), Ive used Sykes, UK Holiday Cottages, Cottages.com, Booking.com and airbnb.

🙄 No one is drinking it, are they?? So what? Especially if everyone is showering before using it?

It really isn’t ‘luxury’ to expect dishes to be clean! That’s basic. 😂

But to expect the cleaners to inspect every bit of cutlery and crockery is luxury! It’s just simply not something most cleaners can accommodate in a turnaround. I do changeovers for a 6 bed holiday let btw.

It’s an unfortunate blip that may lead to them checking the dishwasher is working properly so it doesn’t happen again - not something to demand a 15% refund for. The demand for everything to be faultless and if not get comp is pretty gross and unrealistic. Like I said, if it were a pattern of dirtiness that’s a different matter.

I had three holiday cottages and a team of 4 cleaners. If check out is at 10 and check in is at three then it doesn’t leave a huge amount of time to do much other than clean and change the beds. Often guests check out late/check in early and either leave the place in a bad state or break something. I was making a loss mainly because of the cleaning and laundry costs so they’re now rented which is profitable. I have an Airbnb next door which I clean myself and can be much more detailed about it. Having said that one guest did put a water stained frying pan back which I didn’t spot so apologised. These things do happen occasionally. I have had guests trying to get a refund because of a small amount of dust on the inside of the radiator or a cobweb behind the sofa which they have had to pull away from the wall to get to!

They should refund any cleaning fee plus an extra £100 £200 compensation. What else hasn’t been cleaned properly in there if they haven’t even checked the dishes and equipment?

I stayed somewhere last year where the bath flooded on day one. The water came through the light fitting in the room below! They must have been aware because there was water on the floor when we arrived. We thought the cleaner had split something. I had to put up with multiple visits from a plumber whilst we were there and it wasn’t fixed as they had to order a part. . I asked for some compensation and they offered £100.
