Are reactor light driving glasses worth the extra cost?

At my last eye test the optician recommended driving glasses for the first time. She recommended reactor light rather than separate normal and sunglasses.
Has anyone tried them and ate they worth paying the extra for them?

Reactolites don't normally work in a car , unless it's a convertible with the lid down.

Thank you, bloody optician who did my eye test wanted me to pay for them and also vari focal glasses to wear “all the time”. I very rarely wear glasses at the moment so this is all new to me. Hate the hard sell of some opticians.

I hated reactolite glasses. They didn’t change quick enough if I was eg: in and out of shops or something, and I didn’t like the brown/grey tinge. I can’t remember if I drove in them….. probably.

I suppose the relevant question is can you read a number plate at 20m without glasses, if not you need them for driving.

I absolutely can and am safe to drive. I want driving glasses as the headlight glare is giving me headaches and my eyes feel more tired after long drives than they used to be.

I have reactor light glasses. My only bugbear is when I'm driving if the sun is to my right then that lense goes darker than the other one, and they take a while to go back to normal after being outdoors.

HermioneWeasley · 13/04/2026 20:26

No they’re crap.

after decades of wearing glasses and trying prescription glasses and reaction lenses I have concluded that the best solution is fit over sunglasses- so easy to whip on and off

lovemetomybones · 13/04/2026 20:31

They don’t react through glass so as posters already said pointless for driving. I had this exact dilemma a month ago and got glass and sunglasses both Cari focal. Work well.

I don’t think it’s reactolite she means if it’s headlight glare.

My glasses have a special lens/coating for headlight glare, and it’s well worth it.

Reactolite lenses aren't going to help with headlight glare at night as the lenses won't darken.

I've been wearing transition lenses for about 30 years and wouldn't go back to normal lenses.

I have reactolite driving glasses which absolutely do work through a windscreen they are different and more costly than standard reactolites (when I last bought them nearly two years ago) - I couldn’t drive without them as I’m way to short for the visor to have any benefit whatsoever ever. (Yes I do have the seat correctly positioned)
@WiganWay for headlights you need the yellow tinted driving glasses, which are not reactolite. They are permanently yellow. DH swore by them as a night lorry driver.

WiganWay · 13/04/2026 20:39

I hadn’t even heard of transition lenses to be honest, I don’t think I wear glasses often enough to make them worthwhile. I assume they are expensive?
I hadn’t heard of wear over sunglasses, I have seen clip on ones.

Sorry,Transitions us just another brand of lenses, they're the same as reactolites

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 13/04/2026 20:45

@WiganWay they are fairly expensive. My last set were £300 ish. But they are designer and varifocal top of the range lenses. Without those criteria I would expect them to be a lot less.
