What would you do if you were rich enough that you didn’t have to work?

Say a mystery long-lost aunt left you a few million in her will. Would you give up your job, go part-time, be a SAHM if you have kids? If you chose not to work what would you do with your time?

You're entitled to run your (thankfully) imaginary bookshop however you like, but imagine posting on here saying you were going to open a shop that would ban any other group of people in society?! And saying they could be left in a pen, WTF?!! I don't even have children but I don't like how expressing a dislike of them is almost seen as a badge of honour among some childfree people who post on here. It is, after all, a parenting site.

Edited

I don’t dislike children. I dislike how people parent their children (or don’t). My local bookshop has had to ban children as the parents refused to stop them ripping the spines of books or putting sticking fingers all over them…

As you say, perfectly entitled to my views in my perfect world where I can run my little bookshop and pat nice dogs all day and not have to clean up after peoples children…😁

Spondoolie · 13/04/2026 09:09

Regular massages, therapy.

Long coastal walks with doggo

lots of travel adventures.

Start a charity in area of VAWG.

Volunteer abroad.

Spondoolie · 13/04/2026 09:12

Pay off siblings (and some friends) mortgages

Go travelling with my dad while he can still enjoy.

So many adventures

I would apply to be a magistrate

I’d set up a book shop that included a small ‘quiet’ cafe selling homemade cakes etc in this small town on the North Norfolk Coast (I even have an existing business in mind that I’d buy out). I’d also sell crafts by local artists.

I wouldn’t allow children, but would allow quiet dogs. And I’d make a point of not being child friendly - no baby-chinos, no high-chairs etc. And I’d have a sig of the door saying it’s a quiet bookshop, like a library, and children are not welcome due to the atmosphere but they are welcome to wait outside whilst their parents browse - I’ll even include a little pen for them to be put in and some Percy pigs.

But we’re talking big money needed here as I wouldn’t necessarily want it to do more than break-even - just something to do 2-3 days a week whilst I live my best life. Say £7 million? Don’t want to be greedy…

We went to a local bookshop yesterday, of the 3 of us the only one who bought anything was DS , he bought 3 books with some pocket money he'd accumulated. I bought the last two books I've read online, second hand. Your business plan is flawed

but it’s imaginary…and also as I said, in this scenario I wouldn’t need to worry about money.

😂

I know my imaginary bookshop wouldn't turn a profit. That's why it's imaginary.

I would probably become a full time volunteer for a heritage type place.

Stately home or railway or castle or something.

One of those people that knows all the history of the place and helps guide visitors and research objects and stuff.

Social history and heritage is my passion.

It's my dream job really but without a degree I think I'm stuck with volunteering to get my foot in the door, which I can't do when I need to earn actual money.

Anyone work for national trust?

WinterFrogs · 13/04/2026 09:53

alaom · 12/04/2026 22:11

I wouldn’t work or volunteer. I’d just have a lovely calm life, I’d make lovely food, relax, I’d get a home sauna, lots of hikes, gardening, reading and lovely days out.

Same.

DustyMaiden · 13/04/2026 09:58

I’d still be in bed at 9.57 scrolling through MN. Mostly I paint.

Giggorata · 13/04/2026 10:07

It would probably look pretty much as it does now, being retired, mortgage free, etc.
Except that I would buy woodland because I love woods, also enough land to make a big lake, a newer posher van and do a few extravagant things in the house, like stained glass windows and landscape the garden.
The DC are richer than me, but I would think a mil each would come in handy.
I'd carry on volunteering and maybe continue as a registrar, because I enjoy doing that.

Great idea re the children but not so much the bookshop itself. I’m a voracious reader but haven’t bought a physical book in about 5-10 years! ☺️

keepswimming38 · 13/04/2026 10:09

Buy my daughter the best healthcare and physio I could afford. That’s it.

LittleEmily · 13/04/2026 10:21

Driving a car to get a road trip to travel around the world for watching different scene.

You can still work and do this. A lot of employers offer paid time off.

Badbadbunny · 13/04/2026 10:27

Definitely give up work and spread my time between my hobbies, various clubs/societies, and voluntary work. Due to working full time for the last 43 years, I've not had enough time to do enough of the things I want to do.

Carandache18 · 13/04/2026 10:28

I'd still work, but I can do my job anywhere, so I might work from different places. So rent a place to live in Italy or further afield for a few months of the year. And I'd buy a field I've been watching for approx 40 years and give it to our local wildlife trust, so that it could stay beautiful.

SaltyandSweet · 13/04/2026 10:28

I would work for some of my dearest causes for free. I have an LLM in International Human Rights Law and, save for three years with the UN straight after graduation, I've not used it at all - am now 20+ post LLM. It is my passion and close to my heart and would love the luxury of being able to devote my time and energy to it.

I would also travel, copiously and adventurously - the Kamchatka peninsula, Macchu Picchu, Mongolia ...

MargoLivebetter · 13/04/2026 10:31

Leave my job asap - oh, the blessed relief. Learn to play golf, do more Pilates, swimming and yoga. Go on gardening courses and do more gardening. See my friends more. Do more travelling. Volunteer at my local community farming project. Go to interesting daytime lectures and exhibitions. Breathe and relax.

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 13/04/2026 10:32

I would however buy myself a spectacularly powerful IT setup and the latest gadgets

Badbadbunny · 13/04/2026 10:40

@EarlofShrewsbury

I would probably become a full time volunteer for a heritage type place.

Same here. I absolutely love visiting heritage railways, industrial museums, castles, etc., and really hope that I could start volunteering for one (or more) when I finally give up work, or maybe something to do with English Heritage. Either that or something to do with nature, such as volunteering for the RSPB or Canal Trust, National Trust, etc. History and nature are my two main interests these days.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 13/04/2026 10:44

I’d work part time say 10-3 and take a Wednesday off to break the week.
Would buy more holiday day’s so i could take more trips.

I visited Dunster Castle a couple of years ago and just by chance and circumstance, I got to see the caretaker's live in apartment.

I've never been so jealous of another human before.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 13/04/2026 11:16

I would spend more time with the kids, keep on top of the house and garden, cook more, volunteer, see friends and family. I would not be bored. I enjoy my job but if I didn't need to do it I would have plenty on.
