Recommend a road trip audiobook

Family road trip coming up, please recommend a good audiobook suitable for 10+

We’ve listened to Project Hail Mary multiple times, so that sort of thing would be good.

We've already been through the Harry Potter series.

thanks!

Just William?

HedgeWitchOfTheWest · 12/04/2026 21:38

Thanks, not sure it’s the right type of thing.

Youngest is 10, eldest is 15 so needs to be clean in terms of language & themes, but grown-up enough for us all to enjoy.

We quite enjoyed:
Ready player one
Holes (maybe too young for 15 yr.old)
Noughts and crosses
Morrigan crow books (in principle too young but we loved them til too old and the audio books are really good)
Curious incident of the dog in the nighttime
Northern lights
Last Dragonslayer (Jasper fforde)
Girl with all the gifts (maybe too old and gory for 10 yr old)
Bill Bryson notes from a small island
Adrian mole

Nothing beats hail Mary though!! We quite liked Artemis by Andy Weir too but it's possibly a bit unsuitable for 10 yr old! And also it's a bit ridiculous imo!

@SummerLightningThanks you’ve got the right type of thing there!

Ready Player One might be the one, I know DH has listened to it and the kids have watched the film.

We’ve listened to the Northern Lights series before, and some Bill Bryson.

I’ll look up some of the others too.

Thanks!

Not an audio book, but radio comedy.
Cabin Pressure - fantastic family audio comedy. Four series + Christmas special. It’s all on Audible, sometimes some of it is on BBC Sounds. It’s seen us through many long journeys - we have even been known to go a slightly longer way home just to get to the end. It’s perfect for 10+.

Jeeves and Wooster, the one with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.

Might be a bit old for the 10 year old but we really enjoyed Paul Sinha's history revision

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

What about The Martian? Also Andy Weir.

Jeeves and Wooster, the one with Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie.

I thought this was a TV series. Is there an audio version with both of them? The one I have is Stephen Fry reading it and I don’t love it, I don’t think his voice suits Bertie!

In my own road trip experience, the ultimate follow-up to Project Hail Mary is undoubtedly "The Martian" by Andy Weir, as its relentless "solve one problem, then the next" logic and snarky humor create a shared excitement that makes miles fly by; however, if you're facing a truly long haul, I've found that Brandon Sanderson's "Skyward" is a total game-changer, offering a high-octane mix of starship piloting and alien mystery that keeps both the driver alert and the backseat passengers completely enthralled while passing through wide-open landscapes.

There’s a different older Jeeves and Wooster.
