Speeding tickets near hospital during terminal illness: likely consequences and process

My mother in law has terminal cancer which we only found out about in February.
She started chemo and had her first round which was hopefully planned to give us a year.

Thursday (2nd April) her gallbladder perforated and they can’t operate so she’s deteriorated fast and yesterday entered hospice care.

Today we got our first speeding ticket 😫
There’s a zone near the hospital where it has a 40-30-40 stretch and the 30 has a camera.

I have been coming off the accelerator as we approached the 30 sign but then just coasting down until hitting the 40 before increasing speed again. Based on my husband’s ticket today, he’s pretty much just stayed as though it was a 40 zone (ticket is 39)

We are in an area that has persistent postal problems so just because only one ticket has arrived from the offence on 3rd April that doesn’t mean anything.

I’m worried we will both lose our licenses on top of everything else. Does anyone have experience of how this works when multiple offences occur in a short space of time under huge stress? I was effectively camping there all day so only came and went once daily but my husband was more come and go as he was looking after our son.

Im.sorry about yoir MIL, i hate these 40 30 40 30 stretchs of road , its like they change the speed limit to catch you out. Particularly when there is no changes in the road or housing .
Near us theres one where it changes to from 40 to 30 and a speed camera almost immediately in the 30 zone , it then goes back to 40 ourside a secondaty school!
Anyway thats no help to.you but you have my sympathies.
You can go.up to 34 mph in a 30 zone, 35 mph and above youll get a ticket ( i got a ticlet for 35mph)
If you havent had a speed awareness course within last 3 years then youll be offered that and if you accept you wont get points, fine/fee is the same £100.
Then above that youll get 3 points on your licence and £100 fine for each minor speeding offence.
Once you get to 12 points you can get a ban unless you plead hardship/special circumstances, if it gets to that and hopefully it wont you can use a solicitor to advise and represent you.
But basically if youre caught slightly speeding no more 4 times within a 3 year period then you will be ok. ( not condoning just doing the maths!)
Hopefully no more tickets will come , i know it must be really nerve wracking.

I was on a speed awareness course many years ago. One man should have had an immediate ban because of the speed he was travelling. (Taking his dying wife to the hospital) they gave him the fine and Speed awareness instead. I think there is discretionary decisions when needed.

There is a very similar zone near my hospital. I am the one with advanced cancer. I am often driving myself to the hospital because it’s an hour from home and Dh needs to be with the dc. I’m in pain. Sometimes I feel quite unwell - had to take myself in yesterday in holiday traffic, with a high fever having heart palpitations. I’ve never gotten a speeding ticket. Knowing an ill person doesn’t mean you can just not pay attention when driving.

It also doesn't mean that you can drive when not fit. What you are doing is dangerous.

OP, does it have a fixed camera on that stretch of road? Or was it a mobile camera?

is there a possible of going another way? There might be a speed camera in that spot because someone got seriously injured, and there’s a real risk of it happening again.
