Should the shop or customer find out components of a product?

We've been looking for a specific shape/size of sofa for ages and found one in a local, independent store, that we've used before. I've since been reading about TCPP, a fire retardant product which has shown to be a carcinogen and is often used in sofas and other products.

I rang the store to ask if they knew if the sofa contained TCPP or had a list of the products used within the sofa. He suggested I contact the manufacturer myself. Would you expect the shop selling the product to try finding this out, or is it normal for the customer to find out themselves?

I think it depends how much they are bothered about your custom and their level of customer service. Some will go above and beyond some won't. You now know this shop isn't overly bothered about your custom.

You could have just banged the manufacturer an email rather than bang out this OP

Who cares? Just ask the manufacturer.

They’re selling sofas. I’d expect them to know the sizes, the colour choices and whether or not it was fire retardant. I wouldn’t expect them to know the chemicals involved in the manufacturing process, any more than I would expect Sainsburys to know what type of flour Hovis used in their loaves.

You seem quite reluctant to email the manufacturer. Is that because you think you shouldn’t have to? Or is there another reason?

The customer.
