Do DC usually change out of school uniform in the evenings?

This one has baffled me. Just read on another forum that it's chavvy to have DC not change out of school uniform once home.
I'm sure me and my siblings only wore our own clothes at weekends and on school holidays/non-uniform days. If it was a schoolday then we'd wear the same uniform set all week as well (but DM wasn't known for having the best hygiene standards, and we were only bathed once a week etc...this was in the 90s).

Totally depends on what they’re doing. Going to activities or running around outside in the mud? Yes, they change first.

If it’s raining and they’ll just be at home inside for a few hours until dinner and showers, not necessarily.

It mostly hinges on whether I need to wash them for tomorrow or if they are going to splash around in mud though.

Mine only change if they have a club or activity! Or if we get wet on the walk home. My washing pile is big enough! My neice and nephew change as soon as they walk in (but they are quite big tbh and find uniform uncomfy and only ever wear joggers etc. whereas mine find uniform comfy and like to wear jeans etc so maybe that’s why they aren’t bothered about changing.

My kids always did, but they didn’t have multiple sets of school uniforms, so the first thing they did when they came home was get changed and hang uniforms up

Mine both change as soon as they are through the door.

This.

The word 'chavvy' is offensive.

Many kids change straight out of uniform, many don't. It's just like shoes on/shoes off in the household - it's not a meangful measure of anything but family preference.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 11/04/2026 13:39

Mine always change. I’ve never really thought about why, it’s just what I always did as a child.

Mine did the same. School uniform is for wear when in school...

Change as soon as she’s in. Usually into lounge wear/tracksuit. Who’d want to sit in a blazer and tie while chilling at home? Even in Primary and wearing a polo shirt she’d still change. I didn’t wash her skirt every day, so best to get it hung up and kept clean for the next day.

I only changed if i was going out after school, on a normal evening i would wear my uniform til bedtime, my brother was the same. Mum didnt have a uniform but didn't feel the need to change and my Dad would keep his suit trousers and shirt on but exchange his jacket and tie for a jumper. It saved on washing. I thought this was the norm and was surprised to hear that my husband would get in trouble if he was still in uniform when his Mum got home from work. Although she said nothing to me she told him that she thought it was odd and 'not nice' that i didn't change out of my work uniform when i got home. On a couple if occasions she would say 'go and get changed then.' It confused me.

LittleMissClutter · 11/04/2026 14:03

Mine always changed within an hour of getting home.

ETA: When I was a kid I always changed because I used to like to play outside in the street or the garden.

Boxiboxi21 · 11/04/2026 14:19

The word 'chavvy' wasn't used, it was 'council' which imo is even worse. Most of my relatives live in council housing.

DD5 changes into pyjamas when she gets home. We don’t tend to go anywhere after school.

Hayley1256 · 11/04/2026 14:23

My DD10 changes out of school uniform, normally into PJ's or some lounge wear

AgnesMcDoo · 11/04/2026 14:24

Mine do most days

Tulipvase · 11/04/2026 14:25

Mine changes due to a desire to be comfortable. When they were primary age, prob not so much.

Needspaceforlego · 11/04/2026 14:26

Mine only really change if they are going back out either to clubs or play. But that might also be to do with being in wrap around care 3 days a week.

I think it comes down to what works for individual families. I think some habits from previous generations may be a result of the hassle of washing and getting stuff dried without a dryer.

WhatNoRaisins · 11/04/2026 14:28

We do as you can often get more than one wear out of a sweatshirt or skirt. Also it's more comfortable and I agree that school clothes are for school.

mondaytosunday · 11/04/2026 14:30

Chavy? My kids didn’t really when young but I think from secondary my DD would change into jammies asap and certainly tie and blazer off. My son often had sport so would be out of his. But no slight or judgement if they didn’t!

FieryA · 11/04/2026 14:33

Always change after coming from school into normal clothes.

Cozicanhahaha · 11/04/2026 14:35

Mine would happily just stay in their uniforms but I make them put normal clothes on so their not playing out in their uniform

TheAquaBiscuit · 11/04/2026 14:41

Mine were active kids going out to clubs 3 nights a week. Occasionally if we were late home the girls might go to choir in their school shirts and skirts but with a non uniform jumper on top. Other two nights there was cadet uniform or dance kit required. DH medical so he changed when he got home or before he left the clinic. I have never been one for 5 sets of school clothes do the children got 2 or three days wear from a skirt or pair of trousers.
