Anyone else developed intolerance to alcohol?

I’m interested in people’s experiences of developing intolerance or allergy to alcohol.

im not a massive drinker, will have 1-3 drinks about every 3-4 weeks, no drinking at home only social events so if not going out won’t drink at all.

I went out with some friends this week, I had a G&T and instantly got horrible tummy cramps. I had a break just drinking water and it went, thought it was the G&T so had a drink of wine, same thing happened. So stopped drinking, but when I got home I felt horrible, and then my tummy and chest were itchy and I had the most horrible headache and snuffles. Went to bed and all symptoms gone.

I’ve really noticed then whenever I drink I get similar symptoms - horrible headaches as I start drinking and reflux/tummy pains. I’m not talking about getting these after 4 pints or anything like that - it’s after 1-2 drinks,
always small glasses.

I actually really like to have a drink occasionally (I never have more than 2 drinks as can’t cope with hangovers). So feel sad that I can’t enjoy a glass of wine any longer .

Oh god yes. I started winding down a few years ago, put it down to getting older. Now I’m refusing a snifter of sherry if it’s more than 11%!

The weaker white wines are bearable. But absolutely nothing fizzy.

I live in hope…

The second I turned 40!
Havent touched the stuff in 3 years. Life’s better without it anyway (and I look better😄)

I've never been a big drinker. I hate all kinds of wine so stuck to fruit ciders as I actually enjoyed the taste. However over the past few years (late 50s) i began getting a strange pain in the sides of my face and would wake up feeling awful - even if I only had one drink.

Thankfully they've now brought out alcohol free fruit ciders so I can drink again.

begonefoulclutter · 11/04/2026 12:39

Yes. My system can't tolerate alcohol at all, even in things like desserts or a casserole. It has such an untoward and very unpleasant effect on me that I have developed an aversion to it, and can't bear the thought of touching the stuff.

I can just about get away with a single gin & tonic once a year when we are on holiday, but other than that I avoid alcohol like the plague.

TheBeatlesWhoarethey · 11/04/2026 13:06

Garrr so clearly a ‘thing’.

It panicked me a bit as it was really a quiet immediate reaction and I thought I might vomit right in the middle of the pub garden!

I don’t drink near or larger so can’t even drink non alcoholic beverages at the pub. @RaraRachael do you get the ciders in pubs? Maybe that’s the way I can go.

Yes in my 50s during menopause. I havent had a drink in 10 years. It makes me as sick as a dog.

RaraRachael · 11/04/2026 13:23

@TheBeatlesWhoarethey I rarely go to pubs so get mine from supermarkets as I prefer to have a drink at home.

My experience in pubs is that they have a very small choice - usually Kopparburg strawberry and kiwi/lime (I can never remember which) and that's one of the few I don't like!

Yep

Buscobel · 11/04/2026 13:49

Half a glass of Prosecco gives me a hangover and wine is the same, so I don’t bother. I like a mocktail or a no gin gin.

Flyingkitez · 11/04/2026 18:48

No cramps but I get really dehydrated and can’t sleep even after a few drinks so it’s a no for me. Very occasionally one glass of wine but I need to try alcohol free I think!

TheBeatlesWhoarethey · 12/04/2026 13:37

@Flyingkitez oh yes the lack of sleep! I just can’t afford to have a shit nights sleep any longer!

Yes, once hurtling towards menopause the booze had to stop. I have the very rare whisky or sherry now. I miss the taste and do drink low/no alcohol beer and cider but the equivalent wines are just nowhere near the same. And I'm not splashing out a fortune for non alcoholic 'Spirits'.

BreakingBroken · 12/04/2026 13:56

Well known common perimenopause/menopause issue.

Augustone · 12/04/2026 14:11

I find it makes me very grumpy and irritable even after just one drink so just avoid now. I sort of miss having an occasional nice glass of wine with dinner but honestly, the bad attitude that would follow just isn’t worth it.
