Scar needs suncream - don't trust nursery to remember!

My preschool child has a scar on their face. I've been told they must wear suncream all the time - even when it's overcast - and it must be applied every couple of hours. Apparently any sun at this stage could cause it to be permanently discoloured.

I've given the nursery suncream and they've said they'll remember but there's definitely been times when they've forgotten. Now the sun is coming out it's really stressing me out! Does anyone else have experience of this? Any tips for ensuring his scar is kept safe in the sun?

Thank you

If it's on their face send in a wide brimmed hat as well and just put it on before you drop them off with a thick, sports suncream.

A hat will do the job

A zinc based sunscreen will last far longer - I find with mine I only need to reapply once per day versus chemical formulas which wear off. I looked ghostly white all summer despite working outdoors, no sign of a tan so it definitely works

Depending on where it is/how big it is could you cover it? With a plaster or similar?

Silicone scar tape?

This is medical - you should ask for an appointment with the manager to discuss and get it put into their medical process.

They can't forget, it simply isn't acceptable. They need a system where they record they have done it - as they would for medication.

She may have to just have suncream every day, as having it on indoors is better than not having it on outside. A daily routine would be much more reliable than an 'if we go outside' approach.

The hat is not adequate as it can easily come off - if a hat was enough, the hospital would have said so.

A medical care plan should be put in place. In it I would state that an alarm is used set for every 2 hours for example so they remember.
Also, I second a zinc based sun block. Moogooskincare.co.uk do great ones especially for young sensitive skin.

Agree with @newornotnew - it needs to be part of the care plan like medicine would be and if they can’t cope with that then you’ll need to move to a place that can.

Have you looked at those all-day sunscreens? P20 (is that the name?). Or a heavy zinc sunscreen that is visible to act as a visual cue. And yy to a hat, but mainly: they don’t forget to do nappies or lunch so they need to find a process where they don’t forget this.

Where I work we set an alarm on Alexa for situations like this. It really is very easy. What makes you think they aren’t always ‘remembering’?

Peclet · 10/04/2026 23:06

8 hour sun cream?

zinc sticks are good too and brightly coloured so easy to see when faded/come off.

StolenTeapots · 10/04/2026 23:08

Ridiculous they are forgetting. This isn't just a preference, its medical
