Is this normal for constipation?

I'm not asking for people to share stories of bowel movements, I'm not the pooh troll!

I've had a tender spot on lower right abdomen for 10 days exactly where my appendix pain was 10 years ago. I can feel a long strip of hard tissue if I press hard like an adhesion. My appendix was removed. Then extreme lower back pain so bad I couldn't stand so took ibuprofen for this. I then got really bloated and nausea. Saw the GP who couldn't care less about abdomen or back pain and focused on the constipation. Sent me away with laxido, dulcolax and glycerin suppository.

I've been on the maximum dose of all 3 for 3 days and only managed small, very loose movements. I also can't push and it feels like its just falling out. Internally, I can feel a large mass from both the front and back but not hard or impacted, more squishy and movable.

Do I need to go back and demand more investigation or is this part and parcel of constipation? The GP is so uninterested I'm not sure if I'm being fobbed off or worrying unnecessarily.

Just to add, I'm eating prunes, Yoghurt, flax Seed, strong coffee and gallons of water. I've been doing abdominal massage, sitting with my knees up, and using a stool on the toilet so trying everything.

Personally I'd call 111 to rule out an obstruction as you've had abdominal surgery before.

Anxietyspiral · 10/04/2026 09:11

Yes this is what I'm worried about. Everything online says not to take laxatives if you suspect an obstruction but the GP won't entertain further investigation until I've tried the laxatives 🙄

Yeh Just give them a call, they've been quite good in the past for me on issues. They will probably send you to an OOH centre to be checked over.

I would give 111 a call, as someone whos had obstruction, the earlier you get something done, the less invasive

Anxietyspiral · 11/04/2026 09:05

Thank you. I'm having very small, completely liquid bowel movements. Every half hour or so, sometimes more often. Still feel bloated, nauseous, and not fully empty. I'm reluctant to keep taking the stool softeners because how much softer can it get? Also been trapped in the house for the last 3 days. I tried to pick up the dc from their dad's last night but had to turn back 3 times.

I'm going to call 111 once I finish my coffee.

May I ask what the treatment was? I'm dreading bowel surgery again as the recovery is rough.

Sounds like you could have a bowel prolapse. Colonoscopy and proctogram is what you need from your gp. I feel your pain 😢

That sounds like you have impaction and you're getting over flow. Wouldn't hurt to ring 111 but personally I'd wait until Monday as A and E at the weekend will be hellish.

Yes I just checked wait times and its at 400 minutes. I'm on hold to 111 so will try to push for out of hours gp appointment. I won't be able to work on monday like this. Self-employed so no work no money ☹️

I had a friend who let something like this get pretty bad & she was in hospital for literally months.

Worth hanging in there for either 111 or the hossy.

Anxietyspiral · 11/04/2026 13:48

Currently on the surgical assessment ward at hospital awaiting triage. I am praying it won't actually be surgery. Is there anything else they can do before that? They sent me here from out of hours gp so not had a scan or anything. Surgery would be absolutely catastrophic for me right now 😢

If it's volvulus they can sometimes just untwist it and it sometimes only takes about 15 minutes. So you don't actually need surgery.

Oioiqueen · 11/04/2026 15:51

Glad you were taken seriously in the end. At least you are now in the right place to get it sorted.

Anxietyspiral · 11/04/2026 16:07

Thank you. I'm waiting for a ct scan now. Doctor said possibly adhesions from previous surgery or Chron's.

OP posts:
Anxietyspiral · 11/04/2026 22:48

Nothing showed up on the ct scan so I've been sent home and told to continue with laxatives. I've ordered a phosphate enema as recommended up thread.

good luck. I've had issues like this and it's unbelievably painful. Like you've got set concerte in your tummy. I was diagnosed with ibs after. Glycerin and a lot of laxatives sorted it. Something like12 sachets of laxido and pints of water. I was I. Pain for a good few days
