Antihistamines making DS10 aggressive

Anyone else had this with their child/themselves?
Obviously, pollen is quite bad atm. DS and his dad both suffer with terribly and having recently moved to countryside, it’s stepped up a notch. I’ve tried Piriton for DS in the past and it made him irritable, hyperactive and impulsive and as soon as I stopped giving it he was back to normal.
This year I thought I’d try Benedryl, well. We’ve absolutely hideous day of aggression and obnoxious behaviour. Has anybody else experienced this with antihistamines? Does anyone have any recommendations of other types for a 10 year old? He definitely needs something as the blocked nose is stopping him sleeping but we can’t go on like this- it’s like living with an angry drunk!

Yes this is called paradoxical excitation. It's probably worth trying some other antihistamines such as Claritin.

Have you tried using nasal spray? I got some from the pharmacist for my DD, it seems to be working well.

Not aggression as such but I know some people with ADHD who go pretty hyper on piriton as opposed to those of us it makes drowsy.

Have you tried the once a day non-sedating ones? Like cetirizine or loratadine?

Otherwise, I agree with combining that with a saline nasal spray or wash.

If none of those work, see your GP as there are other options. Dh has quite bad allergies and none of the OTC ones work so he has tried lots of different prescription ones.

We use zirtek, the liquid one. The only issue is we have to buy two bottles at a time as they sometimes find them hard to order in
